For any of you who take Metformin to control your pcos, how much of it does your doc have you on? This may be a dumb question but I'm wondering since having RNY if that should mean I need to take less than my original dosage or would that even matter?

Hello, I have always taken 500mg once a day.  I am very insulin resistant than hormonal. Now one of my friends who has more of the hoemonal part facial hair etc takes it twice a day still 500mg.  I just it just depends on your individual situation.  After the surgery it will probally not be needed. I hope that helps!!!~Candy

I am supposed to be taking 100 mg a day i am taking the 500mg.  WLS does not get rid of PCOS it just makes the symtoms less severe.  If you want to get pregant anytime stay on the metifomin, it really adds with fertility and helps prevent cysts from forming on your ovaries.  catnip

I'm pre-op and take 2000mg of extended release Met. I see a PCOS specialist and at my last appt I told him I will probably have surgery soon. I asked him if I could go off Met for the 12 weeks that I would have to be crushing all of my pills as at the time I thought I would have the RNY (though I'm now looking into the VSG). He was fine with this and said I might not even need as high a dosage after that anyway. He said that I will probably not need as much Met post-op. Do be aware that extended release pills (like Met XR) won't be absorbed in the same way if you have RNY. In that case, any meds you take as extended release would need to be changed to non-extended release due to mal-absorption issues re: extended release meds. HTH

I was taking 2500 of met prior to surgey. Went off of it for 6 weeks afterwards since it sometimes causes nausea and my surgery doc was concerned about me vomiting. I'm back on, but now at 1500.

I am taking 500MG twice a day, but I just started taking it about 6 months ago and am still trying to figure out my dosages.   My doctor worked me up to this dosage so as not to get the stomach issues and the nausea.  I was told it is probably something I will have to take the rest of my life, but losing weight my help some of my insulin issues and then I may only have to take a lower dosage.

After my VSG, my doc took me off metformin.  My PCOS symptoms are all but gone, and I no longer need it.
