You can get a good idea whether someone has PCOS or not just by looking at them.  Where do you carry your extra weight? In your belly?  What about facial hair? And then there are the dark patches of skin wherever it folds, elbows, neck, joints, etc  and what about the hair on your head is it a bit thin? I would suggest that you get a fasting blood sugar level done as well as a measurment of your estrogen and testosterone.   Did you get reffered to an endocrenologist? (sorry i can't spell - en/doc/ron/nol/lo/gist is how you say it) Having been seen by one will probably help in your application for surgery. Welcome to Club PCOS, we are a fine bunch of women. catnip

Hy Catnip, I didn't know you had PCOS. When I went to the endocrinologist he made me take a 24 hour urine catch. One of the things they find is the presence of insulin in your urine. A key sign to PCOS. I cannot wait until I get my DS and start to control this beast. Steph

ahhh the 24 hour urine test. I had the joy of doing that one  TWICE!   What they are looking for in that one is the insulin in your pee vs the insulin level in your blood.  When I was first told about PCOS they didn't even call it PCOS. I just had a hormonal system that didn't work right. (yeah like i could every feel normal after that one!)  catnip

It is sad how many women have PCOS(somewhere around 8-10%) and that doctor's do not routinely check for it. I wonder what I could have done to slow it down if my doctor had checked me early on. BTW, you date is really coming up soon. Congrats! Steph

The doctor will also do a lab test to check your testosterone levels; you will also probably need him to check for insulin resistance.  They usually go hand in hand.  I asked the doctor to please check me, he kept running all these lab tests, ran up the bill to $1200 and at the end, guess what test he ran which came back that I had insulin resistance?  The one I asked him to run in the beginning!  It was the blood sugar test where you drink something and then they take labwork every few hours...  fasting glucose? Anyway...  yep go see an endocrinologist or a gynecologist that specializes in it.  Mine is very good and I was on a good treatment plan.

I told my Doc the symptoms I was having and how no other Doc could/would help me.  I had started to fill "full" and would be in pain when I tried to lay down, sit/stand up some days. She told me that it sounded like PCOS and scheduled me for an untrasound.....and there it was. A uterus and ovaries bombarded by large, small, miniature, and gigantic cysts. Just floating around. She almost thought that I had only one ovary, until she finally saw it struggling underneath a grapefreuit sized cyct.

Well, my doctor did a vaginal ultrasound and could clearly see them!  I had the hairs starting on my face and the ridiculous weight gain, but couldn't figure out what was going on until he saw my ovaries on the screen.  Then, it all made so much sense! Definitely ask for a ultrasound.  I was insulin-resistant, too; which is why I was a great candidate for the RNY!
