How many with PCOS have been sucessful with WLS other that RNY?
You're right! but actually i was talking to my doc today, and we were discussing PCOS. She was saying that certain hormones, such as testosteron and cortisol, some of the main reasons people have PCOS, are drawn to, and strored in fat cells. that is why losing the weight will help get rid of PCOS symtoms. plus, the release of all that stimulates your body to increase estrogen production. So, that is why some people who've had other weight loss surgeries experiance a period of time when their symtoms go into remission. however, the regaining of that weight will cause the symtoms to start up again. PCOS is a genetic thing, and can never be cured...but it can be set into permanant remission by keeping weight off and losing fat!
Just more info...hehe and thanks! i went back later and realized i left in all these spelling and typing errors, but that's just me. i type a million words a minute and have to get the thoughts out there before i forget them *lol*
oh yeah! and you're totally right about the insulin resistance thing. man, that is one of the causes for people to get diabetes. anyway, i've had some wine tonight, i don't know why i'm sitting here editing old posts *lmao*

Bravo Melissa,
Very well written,
I decided on DS because I am doing this once, I will not be a revision and I want to lose the weight and keep it off, DS in my mind is the best surgery for me (and many others)
The thing about DS is that because you are rerouting the small intestine you are eliminating the insulin resistance problem which is what causes most of the PCOS systoms.
The band is only going to help you lose weight but not deal with any of the underlying problems that have caused the weight problems,
Good luck in your search,
catnip I have PCOS and I had Lap-Band surgery almost 7 months ago. I have lost 45-49 pounds so far and have noticed a decrease in PCOS symptoms. My cycle returned a month exactly after surgery. The dark patches have disapeared/lightened. My facial hair growth has lessed.
I think the PCOS has slowed my weight loss, but there were/are other causes like not having the proper restriction. Only you can choose which WLS is right for you.
If you don't want an intestinal bypass, try the VSG. I had mine in January and have been very happy with it. I have PCOS, and my weight loss has been great, and my PCOS symptoms are disappearing.
The VSG is actually the "first stage" of the DS - your stomach size is reduced by about 85%; they just do not do the "second stage," which is the intestinal rearranging part. It is a happy medium between the lapband and RNY/DS. You can find out more on the VSG board; everyone is really friendly over there and happy to answer questions.
Go to the band forum and ask.. there are plenty of us with PCOS. I got my period back within the second month after being banded. I am down 43lbs today (almost 2 months out) and have had a period every month!!!!!!
