I've heard that Drospirenone/Ethinyl Estradiol (YAZ) is the best type of birth control for PCOS.  It has worked great for me...however now i'm going to have WLS, and worry about all the conflicting things i hear about taking the pill....so i was thinking maybe i should switch to an IUD. but has anyone heard of the hormones Drospirenone/Ethinyl Estradiol and being used in that form? i've only ever heard of the depo shot, etc., which have high amounts of estrogen-progestern, etc. Any thoughts?

I loved my Mirena IUD.  It worked very well for me.  I believe though that most ob/gyns won't put one in though unless you've already had children.

I just got switched off the depo shot because of high weight gain.. but wanted to be on it for the surgery because there is no interference with antibotics... but now I am on the neuvaring (think that is how it is spelled)...

But my OBGYN didn't want me to do the IUD before surgery... now he is cool with it... but it costs to much to get done...

reaaaally, i hadn't thought about cost. I guess it would cost a bit to have someone do the inserting, etc. (blah!) i don't know, i'd never thought about it. The depo shot gave me horrible side effects.  We don't plan on children, and i really like the YAZ hormones. i've had the best results in the past 12 years with YAZ. No horrible mood swings, easier, WAY easier camps, etc.  Even on other things i still had some bad symptoms. I guess i will have to talk to one of my Doctors about it. I was hoping someone had heard of those particular hormones being used in something other than pill forms...i'm very leary about the pills for right before and after surgery! and long term too, really!

Personally, I have a Mirena IUD (& PCOS) and LOVE it!  One of the side effects is no periods, which is more common in PCOS patients.  I've had my first one for almost 5 years & am getting ready to get my next one put in.  Professionally, I am a medical assistant at OB/Gyn office, there are only 2 FDA approved IUDs on the market, Mirena which is Levonorgestrel releasing over 5 years.  The other, Paraguard is also known as the copper IUD, it tends to make heavy, painful periods, but is good for 10 years.  Most OB/Gyn won't put IUD in women who haven't given birth because uterus is small & it can be painful.  The most important thing is that you are aware that there is a higher rate if infection with any IUD in place.  (Mutual monogomous relationships are recommended.)  Personally, I haven't had kids, but am allergic to OCP's  (Oral Contraceptive Pills), so unless I wanted to use condoms for the rest of my life, (with my 10 year Mutually Monogomous partner), IUD was the way to go.  Of course, discuss everything  with your OB/Gyn.

you can totally tell you have some medical background *lmao* you sound just like one of those comercials where the chick is telling the other chick about her birth control, and then gives all these in-depth details that people only talk about in those comercials!! *lol* aww, you know i love it though! hehe okay, so, back to the thingo....my thoughts are that i had heard that the hormones in YAZ were the -best- for working with PCOS. ....i don't even comprehend what levonogestrel is! *lol* all i know is i canNOT take progesterone/estrogen pills because it makes my PCOS worse, and the depo shot gives me all the horrible side-effects like the extreme back pain, spotting, etc.  oh yeah and let's not forget all those fun hormone things. I am seriously the pin-up girl for PMS when i am not on my YAZ *lol* ask my hubby, he will get that scared look on his face thinking of the memory of my last PMS, and tell you it's not pleasant!   I get every symptom that exsists, from the pain that gives you  a cold pale sweat and then shoots down your legs, to the extreme back pain, the unexplained furious anger, immidately going into sobbing tears, the 'toilet' issues like bloating, gas, diarriah, constipation (oh it's all there *lmao* one day one or two probs, the next day the very oppisite extreme) and it's been getting worse as i get older. WAY worse. yeah, okay anyway TMI i know...but obviously i have to be on the pill if i feel it makes any of this better (it sooooo does!) i just worry how it will be with my surgery.  We don't plan on kids, so i guess i'll have to talk to my doc if i can ever get an appointment with her.

Hey! I haven't posted here in a longgg time...  thought I would come back now that I am once again experiencing problems with PCOS.  My gyn does not want me on any pill taken by mouth due to RNY & absorption issues.  Also, no to the depo shot. Causes weight gain.  Yes to patch, but now its not working. I'm having periods every 2 wks.  He wants me to do Mirena...  my employer has an exclusion.  They are owned by Catholic charities and it states no birth control device inserted into the vagina is covered.  So he said, OK to the NuvaRing.  Guess what? It too is noncovered.  I paid for it out of pocket and now have to do a letter of appeal since its not for birth control.  (I use it for bc too but its for these dag blasted PCOS & hormone issues!)   the fight is never won, is it?

YAZ was great for me for a month and then I had constant breakthrough bleeding.  I got a Mirena.  I have had a daughter so I don't know how insertion goes if you have not had a child.  The Mirena has been great so far.  I want to warn you, I had awful heavy bleeding for two weeks after insertion and thought, "What the hell did I get myself into?"  But then it abated and my periods are becoming more regularly and progressively lighter now at about three months post insertion.  I am really glad I got it.  I've heard horror stories about the old IUDs (my stepmom had a Dalkon Shield that rendered her infertile in the 70s)) but the Mirena is very safe.  The package insert says the risk of PID is actually lower for women who have a Mirena vs. the general population! Anyway, I'd get it again and probably will after I'm done with my two post-op years and after I have more kiddos (God willing.)
