Birth Control Post Op
Pills are pretty much a no go for RNYers due to the malabsorption. Although you could absorb a good amount of it, it just might not be enough to keep you from ovulating. I suggest the ring if you don't want to use condoms. Or...if you're already a mom go for an IUD.
I started on the OrthoEvra patch at 2 months out at 199lbs and hated it. I was on it for 10 months and was so glad to get rid of it. I mean...it did the job as I didn't get pregnant. But the high estrogen levels made my boobs hurt a lot & killed my libido. After I had my daughter I tried to go back on it but my hypertension came back and the patch only made it worse. So...no patch, pill, shot or ring for me. I'm an IUD girl. I had one placed in 12/06 and kept it until 1/31/08 as we're ready to ttc#2.
Good luck!

Hey lady!
I had thought about the IUD, but decided against it after reading lots of disturbing info online about side effects. I didn't want to complicate my first year post op RNY with other occurrences.
My GYN and I decided to go with the NuvaRing. I had that for about 3 months, but hubby was VERY disturbed by the way it felt and I never quite got the "it's in and you shouldn't feel it" feeling, so I stopped taking that.
I've been on the patch now for about 2 months and so far, so complaints.

I use the Nuva-Ring. I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! Seriously, it's awesome. You put the ring in for three weeks, take it out for one, that's it. When I was researching it, I read that it's actually great for PCOS patients, because it suppresses ovulation, which is, of course, where our problems start. I confirmed this with my doctor, and I was sold.
