Hey Ladies!!!
Hi Sarah! I had lap RNY on 8/3/04 so that makes me an 'old timer' kinda. I've had great results with it and am glad I had surgery. I'm 5'3 and went from 254 to 140-145 and currently maintain that. I too have a sweet tooth and fortunately for me I'm on more of the extreme side of sugar sensitivity and dump on more than 10g of sugar. Like tonight...tempted fate and had 11g of sugar...and dumped. Not really bad...but it was enough. As for my PCOS symptoms they're MUCH better. Prior to surgery I had zero cycles a year and medication had little effect on making AF show up. My diabetes/IR was bad (morning sugars in the 140-150s while I was taking 2000mg of Metformin. Also my blood pressure on 300mg of Labetalol was still in the 150s/90s. And then because of the high testosterone in my blood I have that oh so lovely facial hair and because of the IR had the oh so lovely AN (acanthosis nigricans...dark areas of skin) on my elbows, neck, bra line, waist line, groin and armpits. NOW...I'm the complete opposite. As for my cycles...I have regular 36-37 day cycles and was able to get pregnant the first month we didn't use protection. I got my BFP (big fat positive pregnancy test) 9 years 4 months after we had first started trying to get pregnant. I had a healthy pregnancy & a healthy baby. I gained 30lb and lost pretty much all of it by DDs 1st bday. My diabetes is gone and so is my IR. I've not taken Metformin since the day before surgery. I wasn't even gestational diabetic. My blood pressure was normal...until 3 months after I had my DD. Then for some reason it decided to return but is VERY easily controlled with 10mg Lisinopril and now my average blood pressure is around 100/60. I'm actually going to talk to my doc about doing a trial run off of my meds to see how I do. Now...because my diabetes/IR is gone so is my AN and although there isn't anything I can do about the excess hair...it's NOT GETTING WORSE! YAHOO! I'm now at a point where I can eat pretty much anything I want in moderation. My RNY is a tool that still works for me and I'm very happy with it. I hope this answered some of your questions. If you have more...feel free to ask...I'll try to answer as best I can. Good night! Kristy
Sarah,
You should be prepared that you will NOT dump from sugar. In the beginning I did but after 5 months postop I stopped dumping on sugar (unless I have something with over 20g per serving). I was heartbroken when I realized I didn't dump over the Christmas holidays.
Once again this shows why people need to be very careful about their habits, triggers and find self control from within to deal with what we eat and not depend on our doctors to get rid of our demons.
I wish you well just be prepared you maynot dump from sugar and ask yourself if you can do it on your own.
201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!
And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!
Surgery Date: 6/5/07
