hi all.  just wondering if anyone has a precedent of getting their insurance to cover laser hair removal due to PCOS?  I've done electrolysis (owwwwwwwww) but I have been pricing laser removal in the area. thanks Cheryl

that is something I never considered before but definitely worth looking into! wish I knew the answer, but I will probably ask about it sometime, and if I hear something I'll pass it on

I had laser hair removal, I never tried to get insurance to pay for it because I was told by the dermatologist that it was cosmetic.  It was pretty expensive.  I had my chin done, it was $150 a session and it took 6 sessions.  I could still use another zapping, but it's so much better now I can just pluck the left over hairs.  It got much better after the fourth session, you can't tell for a few week when the regrowth starts.  It didn't hurt and it took maybe 5-7 minutes a session.  Every session was about 6 week apart.  It really is so much better, I hated my billy goat gruff!

hELLO ALL, my insurance company has told me that the laser hair remover is cosmeitc UNLESS the hair is caused or a symptom by another medical condition (PCOS) . She used the example that if you have a car accidnet and need reconstructive surgery that would normally be cosmeitc if they car accident hadn't happened.  Now, my insurance is a bit different but it is a good arguement if you have to fight our insurnace.

Hi, I first had laser hair removal done 6 years ago and it lasted for about 4 years.. I had 6 sessions all 6 weeks apart. Laser is Not permanent and either new hairs pop up that were not zapped initially or some start to grow back after a while.. in my case I think that it was just new areas of growth and not the same hairs growing because it seemed like different areas of my chin and lip.  I just started a new series of laser hair removal. my first session was last week. I was told the new lasers are even better now and more effective than when I had it 6 years ago. She also told me that most of her PCOS patients go back  for touch ups about once a year at a reduced fee which was nice to know! They charged me $650.00 for 5 sessions of both the extended chin/neck and the upper lip. She told me that NO insurance will cover it because they feel it is purely cosmetic even if you have an endocrine disorder. I was told that you can use a Flex spending account to pay for it though if you have one set up threw your employer and it is tax deductable as a medical expense.  It took about 4 minutes total and didn't hurt very much at all. I had tried electrolosis years ago and it took about 30 minutes and hurt like >)*&($YY&*%!!! lol There is also an RX cream called Vaniqa that helps reduce the hair growth after laser.. costs about $100 a month and insurance won't pay for this either do to the same reason.. Cosmetic purposes.. ugh..  Good luck to you!
