Hi guys, Haven't posted in awhile, Just got my approval an date for my WLS, YEAAA anyway, My endo raised my dose to 750mg twice daily, but since I had just filled a script for 500 she told me to take 500 in the am and (2) 500's at night. So I just finished them and took my 750 yesterday, they are so big, my question is this (of course my endo appt is the day after my surgery so I will have to reschedule) Did you all crush your metforim or were you able to swallow that horse pill after surgery?

First of all...congrats on your upcoming surgery!  Second...are you taking the Metformin for diabetes or insulin resistance?  I was on 2000mg Metformin daily for diabetes (used to be IR), and haven't taken a pill of Metformin since the day before surgery!  For many newly diabetics (for type II of course)...WLS reverses diabetes for most patients in days.  My blood sugars were a little higher in the hosptial...but expected with just having surgery...but by the time I got home...they were in the normal to low normal range and have been 'perfect' ever since. Also, Metformin is not a pill to be crushed or chewed due to the way it's made if I remember correctly. Good luck!

Actually it was IR then the last time i went she pretty much said my numbers were high enough to say I was diabetic, I will try and ask her what she wants me to do when I call to cancel. I was so borderline I don't think I will need it again, But dont want to stop till she says too, but she is also anti wls  so we shall see how it goes when i tell her I cant come to my apptcause I will be in the hospital having my insides rearranged lol. Thank you for all the info, you are always so helpful

Hi Gina, I was taking 1600 (800 2x a day) for insulin resistance.  I was told to stop 48 hours prior to surgery and based on my checkup 5 days after surgery, I've never had to take them again.  I can't imagine having to take those huge pills post op.  Talk to your endo and hopefully your body will respond well and you won't need them either.  Best of luck to you!

I have not had my surgery yet nor do I have an actual date yet but I did ask this question. I was told......... Metphormin is a time released drug.  I was told that I would not be on it after surgery.  I probably would not go home on anything as well and would be followed closely.  I also take insulin and was told that they would adjust the amount I take to a sliding scale instead of with every meal and bed time. I hope this has helped.  You could also ask the surgeon before surgery.

I actually asked my endo, and she told me that my last dose will be the day before my surgery and more then likely not need it again since my insullin resistance was so borderline. I have an appt to see her a few months after my surgery and will have all my levels tested again. thank you for the response.
