New and nervous...

Hey girls... I am new here...Have had PCOS for the past 6 years, ever since the birth of my daughter. It seems the PCOS came on after that anyway, as I never had symptoms before then. Anyway, I have been on Metformin for that entire time...My insurance company did not count PCOS as a medical condition for the roux-en-y, but for what ever reason, they have approved me! Yay! My surgery date is January 28th... So here's what I'm wondering...(I'm sure many others wondered the same things, so I thank you in advance for putting up with my probable repeats, here.)  1. Will the excess hair growth slow or stop after WLS? 2. What about the acne? 3. Will I still need the Metformin? 4. Will I still need Prilosec or Prevacid? 5. Will I actually lose weight? 6. Will my anxiety improve? I have had anxiety for years, so am really concerned that it will be an issue for me post-op... I sure appreciate any hope you guys have for me! Christine

If you are having bypass then without a doubt you will lose weight. Once you have lost a significant amount of weight your symptoms will most likely improve. I had the lap-band in August and the weight is barely coming off. I have only lost about 13 pounds since then. I noticed that once I stopped taking the Metformin and Yasmin (only because I was getting ready for surgery) my hair growth went crazy.  I don't have a problem with anxiety, heartburn, or acne so I can't speak for what it will do for those reasons.

1. Will the excess hair growth slow or stop after WLS?      I never had a problem with this, I have friends who did and the excess hair growth has stopped. 2. What about the acne?     Too another problem I never had, but I contribute that to using Philosophy skin products and Bare   Minerals makeup. With my friends they have had some clearing up of the skin but the real savior for them was my introducing them to the Philosophy skin care line. 3. Will I still need the Metformin?    Your endocrynologist, OBGYN or WLS doctor will tell you when to stop taking it, for me it was within 2 1/2 months of surgery and it was liberating!!! 4. Will I still need Prilosec or Prevacid?   With RNY the majority of patients take an acid reducer for a while after surgery, I take Axid twice a day, it's not a big deal at all. 5. Will I actually lose weight?   Well if you look at my signature you'll see that OH YEAH you lose weight but YOU have to make the changes for YOURSELF. You still have to control what you eat, drink, how and when you exercise and know that WLS is ONLY a tool it's not a quck fix answer. 6. Will my anxiety improve?   I don't know about this. I wish you well and remember above all do this for you and for the right reasons!! All the best!

201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!

And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!

Congrats on your upcoming surgery! 1. Will the excess hair growth slow or stop after WLS?  I'm not sure if it will stop, but it won't get worse because your testosterone levels will eventually fall into a normal range for a woman.  My excess facial hair didn't stop, but it stopped getting worse...it's been the same now for about 2.5 years. 2. What about the acne?  My acne got MUCH better...instead of having daily breakouts now I have random breakouts. 3. Will I still need the Metformin?  Not sure...that's different for everyone.  Fortunately for me I've not been or needed to be on Met since the day before I had surgery.  I do know 2 other ladies on another website who are post op RNY who do need the Met...so...it's individual.  But chances are you won't need it. 4. Will I still need Prilosec or Prevacid?  You can expect to be on one of them for a few weeks after surgery as you heal...and then unless you get an ulcer...chances are no...you won't need them. 5. Will I actually lose weight?  With the RNY...most definitely.  But be mindful that you change your eating habits to not only maximize your weight loss but to also maintain your weight loss.  Typically with the RNY you're guaranteed to loose weight during the 1st year...after that if you're not careful it is possible to regain.  You only have 12-18 months of a 'honeymoon' period.  During this time you MUST change the way you look at food...going from living to eat to eating to live.  Eat a diet low carb/high protein and the weight should stay off. 6. Will my anxiety improve?  I'm not sure...I've never really delt with anxiety...so I can't give a good answer to this one except for GOOD LUCK! Kristy

My chin hair still grows, so I pluck pluck pluck, lol. My upper lip hair has slowed tremendously. Go figure. My acne has gone away, completely. (Knock on wood!!) I didn't use Met because it caused violent diarhhea. Nuff said. I never has a problem with heartburn or acid reflux. With RNY, yep. I am and it's amazing!! My anxiety is much improved and I'm not on Paxil any more.
