My friend has PCOS and wants to have RNY.  I am posting for her as she has some questions and doesn't have internet right now.   Was it hard to get an approval with insurance?   What insurance did you have, and the requirements? Is there any surgeon who highly reccommends RNY for PCOS? Obesity runs in her family and her sister even had rny. She only has insurance for the next 6 months, is this time frame an ability to get surgery with PCOS, history, and such. Any answers would be grately appreciated. Thanks, Sandie

I'm only a month and a half out, so I can't tell you how the RNY has affected my PCOS yet, but my surgeon told me that RNY usually reverses PCOS.  PCOS in itself makes it hard to take the weight off in the first place.  I had no problem with insurance.  I was approved in two days.  If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me Shannon

Thank you for your reply!  A few more questions: Did you have any other comorbidities like sleep apnea, or such? What insurance did you have? My friend has Medica and wonders how they are with approval. Thanks again!

Hi!  I'll answer to the best I can!  My name is Kristy, I have PCOS & am 3+ years post op lap RNY. Was it hard to get an approval with insurance?   No...I had approval from my insurance company in 3-4 business days. What insurance did you have, and the requirements?  At the time I had Health Net of California HMO.  I had to have a BMI >40, psych eval, cardiac/pulmonary clearance for surgery. Is there any surgeon who highly reccommends RNY for PCOS?  RNY is very good for PCOS.  Women with PCOS tend to loose weight better with RNY than with lapband.   How has surgery helped my PCOS?  Greatly.  I went from zero cycles a year...not even Provera helped me have a period to regular 36-37 day cycles AND...I ovulate on my own.  I also went through 8 years of various fertility treatments which all failed prior to my RNY.  At 16 months post op we went with out protection...and got pregnant.  I got BFP (big fat positive prego test) 9 years & 4 months after we'd started trying to have kids.  Then...10 years to the month that we'd started ttc I gave birth to a healthy baby girl.  My OB told me that had it not been for my WLS...and my weight loss...I'd never have been a mom (my hormones were that jacked up).  Now...at 3+ years post op my acne is MUCH better, my excess hair is better, my cycles are normal, my IR is gone, my skin tags are gone, my AN (acanthosis nigricans...dark patches of skin around the neck, elbows, underarms, groin, 'bra line', 'pant line'...) is gone... Did you have any other comorbidities like sleep apnea, or such?  Yes.  I had hypertension, diabetes type II, and severe obstructive sleep apnea.  Unfortunately my insurance carrier didn't approve PCOS as a co-morbid condition. If she has insurance for 6 months...she needs to call them NOW!  Some insurance companies require a 6 month physician supervised diet before surgery.  Have her call them to find out exactly what they need for approval for RNY as each insurance company requires different things.  Good luck to her! Kristy

I am almost four months out and I wasn't ovulating on my own before WLS.  Last cycle and this cycle, I have ovulated on my own! I had approval in about 3 days as well.  I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa.  My reproductive endocrinologist highly recommended the surgery to me when we tried fertility treatments before I started pursuing the surgery.  (I had mentioned I was thinking about having WLS before fertility treatment.) She said that even a 10% weight loss would make a huge difference. I had comorbidities of sleep apnea, hyperthryoidism, insulin resistance on the way to diabetes, and aching feet.
