Losing HAIR!!!

Soooo...I'm worried about losing hair.  I know it's practically a guarantee that one will lose hair after surgery...but I already have a bit of a thinness at my hairline. If it gets any thinner, I'll look ridiculous, and I'm scared.  I'm also wondering if the PCOS makes the hair loss WORSE. Eeekkkkkkk!  I'm 9.5 weeks out and I keep waiting for my shower to clog with hair while I shower.     One lady said her hair came out in clumps. I almost fainted. Yes, I'm whining...but I'm alittle freaked out about this!!!

Hello I am 5months post op and I am losing my hair as well. The best thing that I can tell you is not to worry so much if it is going to happen it will but you can also make sure you take your vitamins and stick to the protein ... protein... protein diet to make sure that you have done you best to help or avoid this situation. By the way do you know how long your hair is to fall out? Or does it stop when you reach your goal weight? cause if that is so I am in big trouble cause my pre op weight was 518 I now weigh 386 what do you think?

Congratulations on losing over 130 pounds in 5 short months!!! How do you feel? I feel so much better after losing 44 pounds. I started at 310 pounds and I was so uncomfortable. I don't see any difference in my appearance yet but I can sure feel it. It's sooooo  To answer your question...everyone is different. I've heard some say their hair fell out for 3 months and then it stopped and started growing back. Some people said theirs fell out for 6 months...and so on. One lady said hers fell out for a whole year. Good heavens!!!!! And these people all said they made sure their vitamins were taken, they got enough protein, they took biotin, and used Rogain type shampoos. It doesn't seem to matter. What's going to happen is going to happen. I guess we have to grin and bear it.  I'm just nervous about it, but at the same time...I'd have gotten this surgery even if I was told I'd go completely bald...so I'll just try to relax and not concern myself over it. It's just difficult to do that, y'know??

I'm so sorry you're feelin' blue. I completely understand.  I've been married for 18 years. We have a cat. No kids. It sucks. It's not wrong to long for kids. Most people take it for granted that they'll have kids...and they have no idea what it's like not to be able to have them. My husband and I started trying to have kids 13 years ago, and we've never used BC all these years. No kids.  And people can be so insensitive. We already go through hell feeling grieved over what is being denied us...and people try to make us feel better by saying crap like, "You're lucky not to have kids, mine drive me nuts." I always feel like punching them in the nose. Give them to me, dammit, I'll appreciate them!!!  Anyway...we're doing all we can to get to the point where having a baby is all the more possible. Keep hoping and looking forward to the success we've had this surgery to achieve. Try to be happy for the journey as well. Chin up!! Every day brings us closer!! I feel better since surgery, but my knees are still weak and crappy. Going up a flight of stairs is painful. My knees sound (and feel) like rice krispies crackling. Yuck. I've also heard that when people lose weight, especially a large amount, aches and pains are very normal because the weight is shifting around. My back is hurting as we speak. But then again, it hurt before because of the excess weight. Oh, well, this too shall pass, eh?   :)

I hope you don't mind me answering this as well...but I understand how you feel.  For years I wanted a baby.  We'd tried and tried and tried.  And while everyone around me was getting pregnant as easily as they get the hiccups...I was dying inside.  I was about convinced that I'd never be a mom...and just when I'd about given up...we got pregnant.  I was 16m post op and down 114lbs and we decided to not use protection.  I couldn't believe it....it happened so easily I thought it was a fluke...I made DH look at the pregnancy test to make sure I wasn't seeing things when that 2nd line showed up.  Sure enough...I was prego!  And 10 years after we started trying I had delivered a beautiful healthy baby girl.  So...never give up...you'll be a mom.  WLS is the gift from God that allowed me to have a baby.  Give yourself a little more time (since you're just 5m out) and you'll be in my shoes... Good luck and keep on loosing! Kristy

Congratulations on your weight loss so far!  You're doing amazingly well!  Your hair loss should start to taper off in about a month.  Keep up on the protein and start taking Biotin.  Hair loss typically lasts 3m which is one growth cycle. Kristy

Hair loss is completely normal and is a result of the rapid weight loss.  Typically hair loss starts at about 3m post op and lasts for a growth cycle (which is 3m).  For some it's more noticable...others not so much.  For me I noticed it more than anyone else.  I did cut my hair short becuase seeing little short hairs in my hand was a lot less traumatic than seeing long hairs (looked like less).  Also because I have nautral curls the short hair allowed my hair to curl more and give it more volume.  Don't worry...you won't have bald spots...your hair will just thin out a bit and then grow back. It does help a bit to get in as much protein as you can.  If you're not already start supplementing with protein shakes.  Also taking Biotin helps.  It's a water soluable B vitamin that aides in hair/nail growth. Good luck...you'll be fine. Kristy
