I hate Metformin!! I am pre-op
I think everyone who has PCOS and taken Metformin has been where you are.
I loathed taking those darn pills--thankfully I'm off them now, but I know what your talking about.
Something you may want to ask your doctor is are you on the time release metformin, if not ask to be switched to the time release IMMEDIATELY--you'll see a big improvement. Also I only took mine at night and that was a major improvement as well. Don't stop the medication until a doctor tells you to, your health is very important and trust me here--when you hear your doctor say "no more metformin" you'll shout like your in a southern baptist tent revival!!
All the best.
201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!
And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!
Surgery Date: 6/5/07
Something else you might want to think about with Metformin, is that a lot of people can never tolerate it. I tried taking it for 3 months only getting in 250mg and by the end of the 3 months I was so sick and in so much pain that I had to quit taking it. And that was after 6 visits to labs to get blood drawn, 1 MRI, 1 CAT scan, and 3 different visits with specialists and it all came down to my body hated this med and I need to get off it ASAP.
So, my docs and I took a different approach to this... work out 4 times a week and follow a very low carb diet. Basically what diabetics follow. Nothing could be over 15g of sugar with or without it having sugar subs in it and I need to have at least 50 grams of protein a day. I followed this for 2 years and was able to lose 35 pounds. And my blood tests at the end of the 2 years showed great improvement.
Then I got pregnant, after being told that I could never get pregnant, and after the pregnancy I couldn't get any of the weight off to save my life. So I had gastric bypass, and I am down 48 pounds so far and we do the next set of PCOS blood tests around Dec 5th (3 months after surgery)... and I am still not taking anything to "control" my PCOS. Finding the right diet and exercise was the right meds for me...

my docs hate giving out meds since it seems that so many people are over medicated... they also realized that there are some people where meds aren't the best choice... and that is me hehehe... they really hated treating everyone the same way because that cookie cutter approach doesn't work... so yeah talk to your docs... your body could be telling you that it's not working for you... and you know that time released one might work... or you just need a different one all together or the answer could be no drugs at all... but if they don't want to work with you on finding the right answer it might be time to go doctor shopping...
I took it for 4 years prior to my RNY surgery....hated it....then woke up the morning of my surgery and have NEVER had to take it again!
My RNY got rid of all of my issues. What a blessing it has been.

When my PCOS was full blown I took Actos, you might want to look into that. I could never take Metformin, I already had "stomach flu" i.e. going at both ends three times a week without it. The Actos not only cleared that up but also gave me regular periods for the first time in years.
Weight : 350/317/185/150 I had twins, one boy and one girl!
