PCOS and Lap-Band

How many of you who have had lap-band surgery are still having difficulty losing weight? I am really disappointed right now. I had my surgery 2 months ago today and have only lost 10 pounds! I have not started back on the metformin since having the surgery either. I wonder if that will help kick start some of the weight loss (although I never lost a single pound taking it over the years).

I had RNY but do know some cysters who've had lapband and are also a little frusterated with their weight loss.  Both ladies are roughly 1 year post op and have lost roughly 30-40lbs each.  One (I think) is considering a revision to RNY.  I'm sorry you're having such a hard time...I hope the scale moves soon for you!

On another note...if you'd like to talk to these ladies you can meet them on www.soulcysters.com on the Diet & Exercise forum.  On there I'm a part of a thread called WLS Divas...check it out if you like! Good luck! Kristy

I'm in the same boat.  Super duper disappointed.  I had the band on May 22, 2007 and to date have lost 27lbs.  Did I mention the first 20 were in the first 2 weeks?

I have yet to ovulate and am getting worried that this is not going to work for me and that I will not be able to get pregnant.  wah! I have had 3 fills and am at 2.5cc in 4cc band. I asked my general doctor about getting more metformin and he told me no.  He said to just stick it out for a few more months.  I'm getting another fill tomorrow so hopefully that'll kick start my weight loss. Sorry to hear that you are going through the same thing....its definitely difficult to be faced with another possible weight loss failure.

That is one thing I should do...restart the metformin. I stopped it right before surgery and haven't taken it since.  I took 1000mg daily before. Maybe if I start it again it will help with the weight loss? I have just been scared to swallow pills and am afraid they will get stuck. I will cut them though. Besides, thinking about the GI side effects again isn't too exciting.

Before you cut your Metformin check with your pharmacist first to see if you can.  Some medications have a special enteric coating to help them work they way they are supposed to work.  These pills cannot be cut, crushed or chewed.  Good luck! Kristy

Thanks Kristy. I am a nurse so I did know that. Before my surgery I had my doc call me in some regular metformin so that I could cut them. I actually took it for the first time since surgery last night. I was scared about getting the stomach upset so I only took 250mg of it. I will gradually increase it.

Ah...ok.  Didn't know you were a RN!  Way cool!  I'm trying to get into my local RN program...but there are lots of applicants...and limited spaces.  I can't wait to get my RN license...I work in an ER right now and that's where I want to be.  What area of nursing are you in?  Just curious...

Hi Kristy! I have been an RN for 7 years now. I worked 2 years in Infertility, 2 years in the ER, and now I work for an injectable drug management company.  In February I will be taking a certificate course in Legal Nurse Consulting. You will never run out of option once you have your license.
