I am a year out and have PCOS I have not been on any meds other than BC since the surgery, I have noticed lately that I have extreme cravings for carbs, I dont eat sugar so it is stuff like crackers and even bannanas. Then some days if i eat too many I feel drugged and sleepy, Do any of you suffer with this? IS it possible the crazy carb cravings are because the pcos is back in force?

The endocrinologist is always the go for real answers. But I would guess that carb cravings can be from your PCOS. I have PCOS and I am seven months out and I crave carbs too. I eat chips and crackers to fulfill that head-hunger. It's extra calories I don't need and carbs that will slow down my weight loss. But I figure as long as I am still losing and eventually maintaining then I am ok. Whenever I ate alot pre-op I would get very sleepy and kinda pass out. Now when I eat more carbs than I ought to I do get a bit lethargic...nothing like I used to though. PCOS is kinda a crazy condition that effects everyone so differently it's hard to figure out. Some people have to go on some sort of medication after WLS to help out with the weight loss. I am hoping my PCOS goes away completely after I lose enough. Or hopefully at least get better so much it's not such a hassle. I've never been on meds for it and since surgery I've lost around 100 lbs and my periods have been regular comapred to missing 4 months in a row last year. Good luck and try to just say no to the carbs!

I am 5 years out with PCOS and even though I've had a total hysterectomy I still have some symptoms and YES I do get carb cravings.  I really have to watch the carb intake, specially now that I have to take premarin, I know that's why I've gained 27lbs.  It's harder to get off after your WLS evens out so do the best you can while you have your tool in full force!!!!!  I had type II diabetes prior to WLS also and those were some symptoms I'd get after eating too many carbs, you may want to check your sugar levels, let your doc know just in case.   Good luck!

I have the same reaction when I eat carbs - and I crave them, too. BUT - I went to the library and checked out a book called the Insulin Resistance diet. Basically - it explains that people with PCOS or Insulin Resistant need to eat protein with every meal and snack. AND - it has to be a specific ratio of protein to carbs. I started doing this about three months ago and when I really follow the diet (eat proteins with every meal and every snack) that I'm not hungry between meals, I'm not sleepy, and I have begun to lose weight! I hope this helps!

Thank you for sharing! I've got to do this. I crave Carbs and sugar uncontrollable and I believe it's worse than before RNY. I'm scared and frustrated. I need to do some research on insulin resistance because my diabetes is BACK IN FULL FORCE and I'm unhealthy and unhappy. I was involved in 2 major accidents in one weekend and I was bed ridden for months. I'm finally getting some of my strength back. I am beginning to wonder if my PCOS is directly related to my weight gain and why RNY hasn't been as successful as it should have been.

Update to my last post... I've been taking Metformin for my PCOS/Insulin Resistance. That is supposed to help my sugar work properly. A couple of weeks ago my doctor added Byetta to my daily meds. Byetta helps the body's insulin work properly. I lost 7 pounds the first two weeks taking Byetta. Why? Because my carve cravings were gone! My doctor said that Byetta works with Metformin - and that's why I no longer have carb cravings. It's really nice. I feel like I have some control over my eating.
