I was diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago. My gyn said to get on birth control and this would make cycles normal. He also discussed with me about when and if I wanted to get pregnant again I could take Metformin and it would aid in helping me. I've seen alot of entries on here about yall taking metformin and just wondering if yall were ever told that also. I have also seen some of yall talk about the metformin causing possible weight loss. I haven't seen my PCP to talk to him about it any further but If anyone has any further info on this please post.

I've had PCOS for over 10 years...I was on Metformin for roughly 2 years, lost 50 lbs.  It never regulated my period, however and I never had protected sex with my husband since the birth of my 5 year old, even while on Metformin and I never got pregnant.  Fast forward to Dec. 2006, I had my weight loss surgery and THEN had protected sex with my husband.  At 6 1/2 months post op and 60ish pounds lost, I became pregnant during "protected" sex.  No Metformin since before  surgery.  Everyone is different though, and maybe it's worked for others.

No I didnt get into that cause im not wanting to get pregnant at this time. But he did say when I do start it I would have to have some test done cause it effects your liver and he would need to make sure that the levels in my liver were normal to start with. And when I start taking it as long as I was going to be on I would have to have those test every few months.

Metformin does help many women PCOS loose weight which can result in pregnancy but for me it didn't help.  I was on Metformin for 5 years with no weight loss and no aide in fertility.  It wasn't until I had WLS and lost 114lb that I got pregnant at 16 months post op.   Metformin helps the body utilize glucose & insulin properly.  Many times this is what helps us loose weight...the weight loss then helps balance out the hormones...which then can restore ovulation...and if BD is timed right...can result in pregnancy.  Unfortunately for me this wasn't the case. Don't get too discouraged though...I know of many women who got pregnant after going on Metformin & loosing as little as 10% of their weight. Good luck! Kristy

Met never helped me with my infertility issues or losing weight.  I was on it for 4 years.  I also did oral medication as well as 2 cycles of injectables.  That was the hardest 4 years!  It was discovered that I had a pre-cancerous condition due to my lack of periods.  So that took about 1 year to resolve.  I just couldn't put myself and my hubby though it anymore.  That is when I decided to have RNY and then plastics!    So I am ok with my infertility and very hapy will all of my decisions. Good Luck!

I was on Metformin for many years which never assisted me in getting pregnant.  But I continued taking it do to MD requests and it maintained my high risk pregnancy.  So it isn't such a bad thing.

Metformin didn't help me conceive but ACTOS sure did.  After 6 years of IF I now have 2 children.

I hate to be negative, but I will be honest.  I took Metformin for quite some time.  If it had helped me to get pregnant and to lose weight, I wouldn't be on this board.  I tried everything to lose weight, and the one thing that has worked has been WLS.  I'm praying, praying, praying that this will also be the trick to help me get pregnant!  (fingers crossed)  I have a while to wait for that one though, have to let my body get used to it's new plan first!  :) Anyway, that's just me.  It may be that Metformin works for you...it has worked for a lot of people.  That's why the docs prescribe it.  Either way, best of luck to you!!!

My Ob put me on it BEFORE I was diagnosed with PCOS as a last ditch effort to get me pregnant, tried for 6 VERY long years. I had been on Clomid for a long time with no success, but when we added the Metformin, I was pregnant within 2 months.
