Ok...so I too have PCOS.  I had my surgery on Monday.  I never gotten a regualar cycle.  I was on meterformin but the surgegon told me to discontinue it.  I was told I will see my period come along.  How long does it usually take to get a regular cycle?

Hi Ronni!  I had my VSG surgery with Dr. Kim on 9/19, and started my cycle yesterday!!  Talk about fast! I think mine is an anomoly since it's about two weeks since my last one.  I have to induce my periods with prometrium every few months since I rarely have them on my own, and just took it a couple of weeks pre-op. It's really different for everyone, but once our BMI drops below 30, we should see our PCOS symptoms start to diminish!  Can't wait!!

Oh how I can't wait for the PCOS to finally be gone.  I still have not seen aunt flow (my cycle) I am going to ask Dr. Kim when I go in for my 2 week post op appointment in what should I do.

Hi!  How long has it been since your last AF?  If it's been more than 3 months you might want to look into a round of Provera to induce one.  Other than that it takes some time to get your hormones under control to get regular cycles.  I went on the birth control patch 2 months out from surgery so I'm not exactly sure when I went 'normal'.  When I hit 1 year post op I went off the patch to find that my cycles had gone from zero per year...to regular 36 day cycles...and I was ovulating!  If you're not going on any form of hormonal bc than you can expect some odd cycles while your body readjusts.  Estrogen is stored in fat...and as you loose fat the estrogen is released...mostly resulting in more frequent periods.   But for getting regular...it depends on the person.  Some begin to regulate right away...others take some more time (months).   As for the Metformin...I too was on it and told to discontinue the day before surgery.  Fortunately for me I've not needed to go back to it as my insulin/glucose levels have been perfect since surgery (and even during my pregnancy). Good luck in your weight loss & Congrats on your surgery!  If you have more questions...feel free to ask! Kristy

I had a cycle exactly 12 days after my WLS and had been right on the money every month since then.  That was until I got pregnant and hadn't had one since June.  I was on Metformin as well, and have not had to take it again since surgery.
