Carb craving

When I first started seeing an endocrinologist about my PCOS it was explained to me that my insulin resistance basically tricked my body into thinking it needed carbs and sugars. Now that I'm on real foods, I find that I'm having cravings for carbs every time I eat. It's to the point that it makes me feel sick when I eat. Right now I'm still eating very small portions, so there's no room in my meals for any carbs. I eat only protein, but I get the sick feeling through my body like I'm missing something, and all I want are carbs- a cracker or bread or potatoes.
Has anyone else had this problem? How long before the weight loss corrects the insulin resistance and the cravings? Please help, I'm going crazy and feeling horrible right now!

Are you on any meds for PCOS (glucophage? aldactone?)  If so, they might be lowering your blood sugar a bit too much making you slightly hypoglycemic.     Are you eating any veggies?  If so, they should provide enough carbs to stabilize you.   With PCOS, carbs cause carb cravings more than anything else.  If you indulge your craving and eat a cracker, bread or potatoes, you will set off a craving spiral.  You don't want that!!  Make sure you are not slipping any starches into your diet accidentally?  But don't just eat protein only.  Try to get some fiber through green veggies and low sugar fruit (strawberries, blueberries) if your doctor allows. Good luck!

No meds right now. I've been a little fearful of trying fruits or veggies, but I'll try that and double check what's in the foods I've had. Thanks for the advice!

I agree...try some veggies.  Make sure they are well cooked to avoid them getting stuck in your pouch.  If you want fruit...go for a lower glycemic index fruit like a bite or two of banana...good luck! Kristy

I was having the same problem - until someone suggested that I get and read the Insulin Resistant Diet. It helped me understand how to link proteins with the correct types of carbs. My cravings are gone! If you get a chance - stop at the library or bookstore and grab a copy of this book!

I do have that book, and had gotten over the carb problem over a year before surgery. This has all just started up again post-op.

I am doing better with the proteins now and the cravings are starting to go away. I think I was having the cravings because I was having so much trouble being able to get proteins down.

Thanks for all of your advice!
