VSG and PCOS

Hello.  I am new to posting here and was glad to find your forum.  I am looking into having WLS and am leaning towards the Gastric Sleeve. From what I have been researching so far, is that the weight loss rate of the Gastric Sleeve is better than the lap-band, but not quite as quick as RNY. Since PCOS may slow weight loss down, I was wondering if any of you with PCOS had the Gastric Sleeve and how you are doing?   Thanks.

Hi there ~  might I suggest that you c'mon over to the VSG site.  Several gals with PCOS over there in active conversation.  I'm sure they would be glad to answer your questions.   Sherrie

Hi~ I just went to see my PCOS doctor today to get him to write a letter of recommendation for my insurance company.  He rec the lap bland due to it being less invasive and reversable and then also if I were to become pregnant nutrition would not be an issue.  I have/had ruled out lap band for me and I told him my reasons and he agreed.  I told him I really would like to have the VSG and he was not aware of this surgery.  Once I explained it to him he told me something I had never heard before.  He said that the stomach is an important part of the endocrine system that it secreates good " hormones" as well as the ghrenlin (increases appetite) and that he thinks remvoing the stomach is/could be harmful/too radical.  He said that they just leanred about the good hormones that the stomach secreats in the last five years (I forget the name of the one he mentioned). Just thought I pass this information along as it was news to me.

I also have PCOS with almost all of it's "symptoms" it causes. Severe Insulin Resistance. I have tried almost every diet known to man, medications and liquid diets to lose  weight which I have had little sucess. Surgery is my last option. I have a scheduled surgery date of 2/7/12 and originally told the surgeon I wanted the VSG - sleeve but I am rethinking my choice and now considering the Gastric Bypass because I am finding out it is more helpful for people with PCOS then the sleeve because it deals with some hormones that are made in your stomach can anyone who has had either surgery let me know how they liked it and their progress so I can try to get some more information to make an intelligent decision. Thanks

I'm 5 weeks and 2 days out, and I also have PCOS. I had the gastric sleeve, and I love it! I've lost around 24 pounds. I do go through slight stalls, but when I break the stall, I never see that number on the scale again. I loose an average of 1.5-2lb a week. I mean it keeps going down but it's in no way FAST. This is ok with me because it gives my skin a chance to keep up with my weight loss. I also just started the nuva ring yesterday, and I'm hoping it doesn't slow my weight loss. I don't think it will because it just makes you hungry right? I am having cramps, but I was when I put it in. Good luck, and I love my sleeve!
