Ovulation Test
I've been looking into purchasing one of those ovulation kits made by Clear Blue Easy. Quick question though - if I do end up having PCOS, then will the ovulation kit work? I realize I can still have my period without actually ovulating, so does the kit never detect ovulation then? Just curious. I've not been tested for PCOS and the only symptom I have as of right now is the increase in facial hair. I've been off the patch for a little over 2 months. Guess I'm just anxious! I lost half of my body weight after surgery (150lbs) and my husband and I are ready to start a family. Just wondering what you all have experienced. Thanks!
Sometimes women with PCOS have a natural elevated level of LH in their systems anyway, so using OPKs doesn't really give an accurate result (since OPKs detect LH to signify ovulation). However, I was always told by my GYN to use OPKs even though he knew I had PCOS. I had a lot of false positives - I knew they weren't accurate because I was also temping.
It's sort of a gamble to use OPKs if you have PCOS, but you can give it a go. If I were you I'd be checking for ovulation in other ways though too, so you can tell if the test kits are really working.

No, the ovulation kits are not accurate for PCOS. My doctor had to do an ultrasound each month to see if I was ovulating, and then would have to give me meds to make the ovary actually realease the egg instead of allowing the egg to sit on the ovary and form a cyst.

I used a clear plan monitor to conceive my youngest. I'd suggest trying a $10 OPK kit from somewhere like walmart first, before spending a lot of money on them. If you have high LH levels, you'll get false positives- if you're not ovulating or have low LH levels, they won't work at all. If you have long cycles- count 14 days back from the start of your cycle, and that's a good guesstimate of when you're ovulating during your cycle. Test around that time in your next cycle to find out.
Good luck!
