pcos and surgery

I have had PCOS for at least 12 years and was diagnosed about 9 years ago.  My mother had RNY surgery in 2000 and it was an eye opener for me but despite this, I have been unable to lose a significant amount of weight ( I now weigh 296) and any weight that I do lose, I am unable to keep off.  I am hoping to have the LAP BAND procedure done in July or August, if insurance approves it.  I am anticipating the changes that having surgery wilI make in my life.  And while I realize that the road ahead will not be easy, it has to be better that what I am currently living. I am not able to enjoy the simple pleasures in life such as spending time with my nieces and nephews (I just can't play and keep up with them) or doing activities that require much physical activity.  I also have MAJOR problems with depression and anxiety.  I have my Dep/Anx fairly well under control with medication, but it seems like it has been sooooo long since I have been truly happy with my life.  I have a good life, great friends and family and an awesome support system.  I would just like to be able to enjoy them more.  Has surgery helped anyone else get over this hump in thier lives.

Hi. I just recently had the RNY surgery, and I have lost just about 50 lbs since I started the pre-surgery classes in november. And most of the weight has just been since starting the pre-op diet on March 17th. I have met several ladies in this forum who have had either RNY or Lap, and it seems like either one can work well. Just remember that with Lap Band you have to go in for fills for the rest of your life. With the RNY, you get the surgery done and recover and that's it. Also, there is a malabsorbtive factor with RNY that can help reduce the amount of calories absorbed which can help. Those are the reasons I chose RNY over Lap Band, and I was undecided until the week before my surgery. So far I am happy with my decision and the weight loss so far.  Anyway, I weighed more than you when I started, and I feel pretty good already. I don't think there is ever any guarantee for losing all of the weight with either surgery, but it is a great tool for anyone who is committed to the life change. Just do your research and make sure you are ready for it as it will change your life forever. Good luck! Sherry
