Hi Everyone,                       I'm new to this board. I have PCOS. I'm getting lap RNY hopefully sometime in April. Right now I'm on birth conrol pills. I just wanted to know what type of contraception someone else uses. I am looking into the Nuva Ring. Has anyone tried it? Can you take both the pill and the Nuva Ring at the same time? I dont want to end up getting pregnant early in my weight loss journey.  If anyone can help I would appreciate it. I am going to see my OB and I need to at least have an idea about what I want to do.

                                                 Thanks In advane,

                                                     Jenn

hi there, congrats with ur surgery!  You cannot take two B.C. products at the same time.  From what i know Nuva Ring is good for people who weigh under i think 200 pds.  Heard this from a doctor.  Its something to do with the medication and not working on bigger people.  Condoms is what i use right now.  Im trying to let my body adjust and do its thing naturally.  There is the depo shot and other forms of control that last longer... talk to ur doc and see what he/she says.... good luck

I think you're thinking of the OrthoEvra patch...I remember I went on that after surgery but couldn't until I'd reached 199 lbs.  I was going to do it again after I had my daughter but because of blood pressure issues I couldn't...so now I have an IUD since we won't be ttc'ing again for a few years. My sister uses the nuva ring and I hear it is great but not for us. I asked my doctor if I could use it and he said I couldn't do to my PCOS. It doesn't have enough of what us ladies with PCOS need. Something that others forms of BC give us.  I'm off the Pill right now beause I'm to be off of it a month before my surgery. Condoms. What a pain going back to them but we have to do what we have to do. I plan to start back on my Pill as soon as surgery is over and the doctor gives me the ok.  -Erin

Hey there Erin!  Glad to see you on here too!  Anyway...I'd use a 2nd form of BC if you're going to go back on the pill as you may not absorb enough of it for it to be effective.  Once I got to 199 lbs I went on the OrthoEvra patch...but now because of blood pressure issues I can't have that either...so since I'm not going to ttc again for a few years I opted for an IUD...and I love it.  Anyway...just wanted to let you know about the pill absorption thing...

Good luck in getting your surgery date!  Anyway...ladies with the RNY don't normally absorb enough of the bcpills as a post op for them to be as effective as they should be.  If you want to use those as a post op you should also use a 2nd form of birth control like condoms.  As for the ring...talk to your ob/gyn...but since the hormones are being released transdermally it should be just fine...and if you're looking for long term birth control there's also the IUD (good for 5 years)...I have one & I love it...very comfy & I never have to think about it.  Anyway...good luck!!
