Menstrual Cycle Question....

Hi Everyone! I have a question. I used to be very regular and actually had my cycle the day I had surgery (May 11, 2006). I had a cycle in June, but since then, nothing. I get the other symptoms (crampy, cranky, bloated etc) but nothing. When I went to my PCP she said if I didn't get anything on my own within the next couple of weeks, they'd put me on pills to force my cycle. I've had to take the pills before because I was told over 7 years ago (when I weighed over 375) that I had PCOS....which, of course, caused me to not have a cycle until I took the pills. The cysts weren't large enough to operate or anything and I've had normal pap results, the dr just kept an eye on them. I have not had any trouble and the dr said the cysts could go away on their own if I lost some weight (which I thought maybe they did when I started getting my cycle on a reg basis and since surgery, I'm down to 266). Has anyone else had any trouble like this? Also, does anyone know if those (forget what they are) pills will be absorbed by my body ok? Or is this just a result of having major surgery and eventually my cycle will return to normal? I mean I have a dr's appointment for Nov 16, so I'll be asking her all these questions as well, but thought I'd ask around OH and see if anyone else has had a similar problem. Thanks!! Patti

Hey Patti! I can tell you that I had my period for the entire month of my surgery. The extra fat we have and the estrogen are linked...so when you start losing the fat...it screws with the estrogen as well. I had a cycle that lasted for basically an entire month...and then had NOTHING for several months. I felt like crap...but like you...had been through it before(I had to have a shot to start several times). Eventually...I did start...and was never so glad to actually start. As for the pills... I can't take them...because they trigger migraines for me. I have heard that the pill is not as effective after surgery, and that you need to use another form of birth control. Sorry I can't be much more help on that one...but that is what I had been told. I am sure you will get other replies as well. Good luck...and happy weight loss! Stephanie

Hi Patti! You sound like me...no cycles at all as a pre op...not unless I took Provera to induce one. Anyway, at a year out I stopped taking birth control (I was, and back on the patch as the pill is not as effective after RNY or DS surgery) I found that my cysts were gone & I had regular 36 day cycles with ovulation. In fact after 9+ years of trying, we were able to get pregnant without medical intervention our first month trying. We now have a beatuiful daughter. Anyway...eventually the cysts should go away & your cycles should normalize. Good luck! Kristy DD - Alice Kay 7/31/06
