PCOS/Not PCOS?

Back in college I was diagnosed as having ovarian cysts by ultrasound but PCOS was never mentioned. In my preop testing I brought that up as a possible cause for my weight issues. We redid the ultrasound. All clear, so my PCP says I don't have PCOS because I don't have any cysts right now even though we know I did previously. Not sure what to think?!

Well....that's not always true i dont have any right now and I still have it.....theres alot more to it than just cysts....you should research it really good...then tell your dr to think about it again.

Jennifer is right, there is more to PCOS than just cysts. It's an endocrine/metabolic disorder that is characterized by menstrual irregularities, infertility, insulin resistance/diabetes, obesity and more symptoms...women may have one, some or all of the symptoms to varying degrees. Also, there are some women out there with PCOS who are of a normal weight and don't have weight issues, but the majority of women with PCOS are obese. I suggest having some lab work done to check, your FSH/LH ratio which normally should be 1:1, if your LH is higher than your FSH than the likelyhood of you having PCOS is pretty good as the cysts on the ovaries is only a sign of PCOS. Good luck! Kristy

Cyst can appear and dissapear depending on the time of the month and other factors. When I was first trying to get a diagnosis I had an u/s done, and the doctor told me I had no cysts so I didnt have PCOS--- I took that same u/s to an OBGYN who specialises in PCOS/Endo and he showed me numerous cysts on my u/s. A lot of doctors don't know what they are doing when it comes to PCOS, or what they are looking for on the u/s-- I would suggest seeking an OBGYN who is very familiar with it. There are so many more aspects to PCOS than just cysts.

In 1997 when I first became pregnant with my daughter I have really bad cramps. They did an internal ultrasound and said that I had small cysts. In February, my doctor thought that I had PCOS and began running tests. And internal ultrasound was preformed and I was told that I didn't have any cysts. He said that because I don't have cysts and high sugar levels that I can't be diagnosed with PCOS but because of my hormone levels, weight gain, hair growth and other systems I would probably overtime develop cysts and high sugar levels. But I wondered the same thing. In '97 PCOS was never mentioned and now when it is and I go through testing the cysts are gone. I didn't get it either. But it does happen I guess.
