Thank you for this. I have only one thing to add: that people also have the right to not practice any religion at all. It's not just that no one religion ranks over any other, it's also that religion itself doesn not rank above those who may not practice at all. Some people believe in a higher power and just don't prescribe to any particular organizations definition of that higher power. Some people believe there is no higher power. We all have the right to practice--or not--in our own way.

Keith Olbermann did a great story on how the conditions at Walter Reed Army Hospital are... they're terrible. Overcrowded, ****roach infested, shower rot, soldiers with ambulatory problems can't get to their pharmacy or psychologist or even their physical therapist because of ramps that are too steep and paths that are closed off. This is not even a hospital that runs under the Veteran's Administration. This hospital is an operational military facility, being run under the department of defense. These soldiers risked everything, and this is how we treat them? Besides that, Bush's latest budget proposal contains deep cuts in veteran's benefits--including medical benefits. How do you deploy a surge of 21,000 troops and then say that when they start coming back wounded, you're not going to care for them?

Topic: Presidients Day and Religious Freedom
The following came from a discussion I was having elsewhere. I received their permission to post these thoughts here. "With Presidents' Day just a few days away, it's time to celebrate the wisdom of our Founding Fathers, who enshrined the separation of church and state in the First Amendment to the Constitution." "Our Founding Fathers knew that a strong American democracy, and religious freedom for all, required building a wall between church and state. Despite this, religious right leaders like James Dobson, Beverly LaHaye, Jerry Falwell, and Pat Robertson have waged war both on this central American principle and the freedoms it allows. Their campaign hopes to revise American history, ignoring our commitment to the separation of church and state and replacing it with a government based on their narrow ideology." "Fortunately, our founders made clear their opposition to the mixing of government and religion. Leaders like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison frequently commented on the importance of separating church and state, and, in the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli, George Washington's administration emphatically stated, "the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion." "When our constitution speaks to freedom of religion, it mean ALL religions - not just the Christian ones. In other words, the Islamists have as much validity here in our country as do the Right Wing Fundamentalist Christians, as do the Pagans and Wiccans, as do the Orthodox Jewish, or the Hindu, or the Buddhists. The Christian religion does NOT rank above any other religion in importance or validity in our wonderful, great, free, country."

"As for your kids fighting, do what I did, I took the outside and said "whoever survives gets to come back into the house". You should've seen their faces...priceless!" That was GREAT. Thanks for the tip. I will have to try that. Have a great weekend and thanks for taking the time to listen to my side and experiances. This forum was actually the first place and time I have ever discussed it. It was very healing in a way. And thanks for being a much better person then what I have experianced. I didn't realize people like that still existed. It does my soul good to see that there still are people who can love each other without condoning or accepting what they feel is morally wrong. I needed to learn that lesson today. T.

Tammy, After being on this forum for a couple of days...I thank you from the bottom of my heart for such a thoughtful, intelligent reply. I would never attend a protest that was at a soldiers expense or their family. That is cruel and downright horrid. I really started worrying when Bush didn't allow the news people (such as they are) to cover the caskets coming back from Iraq. They did show that during the Vietnam war and it lead to major uproar in the US. Censorship is alive and doing well in the US, which scares me to death. Thanks again for an interesting conversation. As I've only been on this forum for a few days let me say this; thanks to all that have apologized for the name calling, etc. I still think that we should discuss our differences and the things we have in common. After all, we are all out for the same thing, a better way of life for us and especially for our kids. I actually took a "test" on the net to see which political party I was most suited to and it came back 50/50 . So, for the Republicans out there 1/2 of me believe in some of your tenants and the other half is Democratic. I, too, do not vote straight ticket. It takes some work to get educated on candidates but it is so important to do so. Think about this...more people in the USA have voted for American Idol than the rulers of our country. Makes me sick to think that the public thinks that "someone" else out there is going to make everything OK. It's up to us to make the changes. Enough for the day! Have a great weekend. PS: As for your kids fighting, do what I did, I took the outside and said "whoever survives gets to come back into the house". You should've seen their faces...priceless!

I agree with you 100% on Afghanistan and Bin Laden. I definately agree that Bush dropped the ball on that! And as for 9/11 I was one of those who was naive and thought "can't happen here" type of thinking. And even after I thought it was just a one time thing. But since then, I have actually seen some terrorist activity happen right here in Utah where I live. I don't know how much it got covered nationally (inspite of a nonterroist mall shooting ) but it was hushed hushed locally. The only reason I know about it is because of DH's security clearence at some targets. There have been 2 attempts since 9/11 here. One on a chemical weapons storage facility and one on a power plant. That scared the holy crap out of me. It comes in loud and clear that I can't take safety for granted. I learned very quickly that Sadaam and Laden are NOT two separate threats. I do think Bush is a religious fanatic. Actually the term religious wack job pretty much covers it. But does that mean everything he does is wrong? I don't think for one minute that Bush has ALL the answers. But until someone else comes forward with them, we have to make do with what we have. I hate war. I don't get off on it. I'm a mom. I don't like the thought of my children or anyone's children fighting and heaven knows that utopia doesn't exist but it's about time that Bush finally finishes something he started. Like you said, look what happend when we backed down and out of Afghanistan. It's not people who are peacefully and respectfully opposing the war I have issues with. It's the ones that protest funerals of fallen soldiers and treat our military and dependants like they are the scum of the earth. Perhaps I have taken some of what I have seen and experianced to personally. But it kills me to see our men and women putting thier lives on the line and everyone (generalized here, not personally you) here back home wants to get up on thier high horse and point fingers and critizise our government. When it comes right down to it....those who think they can do a better job need to get out there and do it. Like I said in another thread. I can't keep my own kids from fighting. I wouldn't know the first thing about keeping a whole country from fighting. Tammy

Inexperiance is the ONLY thing that worries me about Obama. But I agree. A fresh unjaded face might be just what this country needs. T.

I had to add my 2 cents. Maybe it's time for an inexperienced politician to take over the helm. Lordy, look what "experienced" politician have done and continue to do. I listen to Obama and I feel hope.

there's a whole post just above yours that explains what Clinton did to fight terrorism in his administration, and how he was treated by the GOP for making terrorism his focus. Clinton did not ignore terrorism. He spent an enormous amount of time and energy on the subject.
