Traditional TT vs. FDL tummy tuck

I had a FDL tt. Was very happy with results. When I did a revision I had it extended upward. If you have excess skin above bellybutton a FDL is what you need.

that's what I think, too. I definitely want one after giving this a lot more thought. In fact, when I called another PS office today to set up a consult, I specifically asked them if the surgeon does FDL tummy tucks. If they had said no, I wouldn't have made the appt. Granted, some of them may still say I don't really need one (although I'd be surprised with all that excess skin I have above my navel), but at this point I don't really want to consider surgeons who are flat-out against them.

What is a FDL tummy tuck?

a traditional tummy tuck has a horizontal cut that goes across the bikini line. An FDL (fleur de lis) tummy tuck also has that, but in addition, it has a vertical cut that goes from that line up the front of your torso (up to your ribs or so). So it looks like an upside down "T".

it's easier for them to get to the extra skin and fat above your navel (that is, if you have skin and fat up that high) if they do a fleur de lis. But some surgeons (and people) don't like them because it leaves a vertical scar up the center of your body.

There are also more problems with wound healing with a fleur de lis. Too many intersections that have a hard time healing properly.

I am thankful I did not get the fdl. I was sure I needed it after losing 200 pounds, but my surgeon made my stomach look good without the vertical incision.

I had a FDL tummy tuck about 15 years ago. I lost weight from 210 down to 180. I had a large scar from 2 c-sections that had stretched quite wide. So, in my case, the new scar would be a reduction of a wide scar. One of the nice things is that when they do the FDL, they can remove more stretch marks. My surgeon has you come in after the tummy tuck is healed, to have the belly button put in. I didn't bother. I had no intention of showing skin in public. My scar was very thin, and not noticable until I gained weight to 240 pounds. I have not decided whether to have plastics or buy a winter home in Florida. Decisions, decisions.

Thank you! I am hoping to have the FDL. Did insurance pay to have it done?
