Plastics in Mexico
Several issues need consideration before you plan your overseas surgery:
1) Aftercare is often needed beyond 2 weeks, so have a plan for when you return home. I follow my patients for 6 months.
2) Revisions and touch-ups are common after post-bariatric plastics, so factor in the cost of travel with the chances of revision
3) Travel over 3 hours confers a blood clot risk, and it's increased after surgery. Be sure you have a plan from your doctor to prevent VTE. My facility (and most JCAHO facilities) requires we classify every patient prior to admission for VTE risk, and that we have a plan on file to prevent it.
4) The excellent breast implant warranties (if you are having them) of the major manufacturers do not apply to implants placed outside the U.S.
5) You have limited or no legal protection when travelling out of the country for surgery.
6) Check with Joint Commission International http://www.worldhospitalsearch.org to see if the facility you are using has a "commitment to patient safety and that ritually exercise adherence to these principles at every stage of care."
