Its an insurance program offered by some doctors that costs around $250 and covers expenses arising from complications within the first 30 days after surgery.  For larger cases like TT, LBL it makes good of sense.  Wondering if its being offered very often ??

I had a consultation at last year's OH conference with Dr. Katzen to get an idea regarding cost (spelling?) I know he offers it. Sadly, I don't think I will be able to have him fix my "melted candle" look, but if I am eventually able to afford reconstructive surgery, I will be seeking a surgeon who offers this. As a Kaiser patient, if i go outside of their system and have a complication, I am on my own.

I am planning on moving out of CA, so it is possible that surgery will be more affordable on a teacher's budget in my new home.

Dr Katzen is a respected and most importantly an experienced bariatric plastic surgeon.  As you mentioned, many insurance plans are very specific about NOT covering the costs associated with plastic surgery.  Have you looked into financing through Cosmetassure ? Does your job offer FLEX accounts ?  Also, talk to your CPA or tax adviser about deducting the surgery off your taxes.  The "rules" for using FLEX funds and for tax deductions are less stringent than many insurance companies, and these can be used to cover the costs for these expensive surgeries.

Lastly, you might consider a University based training program if the supervising surgeon has experience with post bariatric reconstruction.

Thank for the finance advise, I will check that out once we get settled in our new home. Dr. Katzen is an artist, the before and after photos show that he does know how to fix the issues those of us who have lost lots of pounds have. We will also have different insurance once we settle in with new jobs. Since I will be in Colorado, I will need to search for a qualified surgeon there, or I am willing to travel if needed, a perk of having summer off.

I used the University of Kansas residency program - you had to purchase Cosmetassure as part of the cost/plan.

Even though the surgeon fees are not covered (we do not bill for complications anyway), the hospital and anesthesia fees are covered, along with any labs, meds, or other tests.  This really ensures optimal care in case you need it.
