Protein?

How much protein did you eat leading into your surgery and post surgery?  I have heard that adding extra protein will help the body heal faster.

I am currently getting between 80-100 grams / day.  Is this enough?

Thanks!

About a month or more before, bumped my protein up to 175-200 g and kept it up for 3-4 months after surgery.  Shakes, protein bars and protein bullets, helped to get it up there, especially after PS and the compression garments.  Few bites every hour or so was all I could manage.

How much were you getting before that?

I normally get in between 80-120 a day. On days I weight train, I will be on the higher side. For the surgeries I've had I will get in that high range daily about a week before and then for the whole recovery period. The swelling that comes with surgery usually decreases my appetite so I supplement with a full shake a day (spread throughout the day but totaling 75 g from that alone).

Once my appetite comes back, and sadly it does, I may only do 1/2 a 3/4 a shake a day becuase I get protein from food sources.

Oh and my nut says to calculate base protein needs, take your target weight x .08 and that is the minimum grams a day. If you work out hard, you can up it some but Too much protein is a waste and will turn into fat.   So although I agree on the concept of adding a bit more protein to help healing and I do that, but I try not to go too overboard on loading up.

Hope that helps

I didn't change my protein levels at all before surgery nor after and I healed up in record time. My plastic surgeon kind of raised his eyebrows when I asked if I should up protein. I guess there are different approaches like with anything else.

My surgeon said to get 100 grams. I usually get that much anyway so I probably upped it to 150. I cannot remember exactly.

But with the sleeve, I think 100 grams would be good.

My surgeon recommended that I try to get 100-150 leading up to surgery. I was already in that neighborhood so I didn't really change anything. I an 4 days post op now.

My pre-op diet was 100g protein a day and not more than 100g of carbs not including vegetables. Then the last 3 weeks I was on 2-3 shakes a day, with one meal of protein and veggie/salad and 2 fruits. That had to be at least 8o - 100g protein. Now after surgery they are saying 60-80g a day. I usually get the 60 in no problem because of the protein shake once a day, but I can't imagine doing over 100. I am 6 1/2 weeks out and couldn't eat that much.
