Hernia repair and tummy tuck: Your input please?
Did anyone go thru a tummy tuck while also repairing their abdominal hernia? What kind of insurance coverage issues did you run into?
What kind of surgeon is best to deal with this surgery. Obviously if you are going for a tummy tuck you are likely to go with plastic surgeon. But if you also need to take care of your hernia do you go with a general surgeon or still plastic surgeon? How long was your recovery after this?
I am still probably a year or year and half away from the tummy tuck, but it looks like I have hernia. So trying to research my options.
I had a hernia repair done by a surgeon that was board certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery. He was able to do the repair and leave me with a minimal scar that is slowly fading. I was lucky that the hernia was at my open rny site, so he was able to also remove a long ugly scar. The hernia repair was covered by insurance. I was in the hospital for 3 days I think for the repair - it was a big hernia. Only felt bad for a couple of days after being released. I did not have the tummy tuck at the same time.
I had an umbilical hernia and diastasis recti repaired along with an extended abdominoplasty. The doctor who did my VSG repaired the hernia and a board-certified plastic surgeon did the rest. Insurance paid for the hernia repair (and associated anesthesia, OR, hospital stay, testing, etc.) and I paid the rest out of pocket. Took a while to save up but I'm very glad I did. :)
Hope this helps!
I am scheduled for an abdominal hernia repair and full TT with muscle tightening on October 23rd. My WL surgeon will repair the hernia and a plastic surgeon will perform the TT at the same time. It is all covered by my insurance as I have achieved 100% EWL and the TT is deemed medically necessary after all that weight loss - the fact that I have a large hernia to repair just means they do it at the same time to spare me 2 surgeries. Good luck to you!
