Vanity may have its upsides. The desire to look good and stay that way can be a "powerful motivator" for achieving health and fitness, reports the LA Times. In other words, if you're vain, say the experts, you're more likely to make the lifestyle choices that will benefit your health (even if health is sort of a side effect or added bonus of plastic surgery).

Face and body contouring is the last step in your weight loss journey and it should be viewed that way. Many people can think of putting on make-up, getting teeth straightened, etc as being vain. Plastic Surgery or should I say cosmetic surgery is just a further progression of this but again, think of it as I do as being reconstructive to taking back your body. I would like more celebrities that have had gastric bypass like Mr. Roker/Jennifer Hudson and obviously have had reconstructive plastic surgery for face and body contouring to acknowledge this fact and be proud of it which would help erveryone else who may be the least bit quilty!

Jennifer Hudson had plastic surgery? I thought she lost weight by dieting with Weigh****chers. Anyway, I like your perspective on other beauty treatments being considered vain in the eyes of the right beholder. I guess dyeing my grey hair could be considered vain, too. Thanks.

Switching gears... Doctor, can you tell me is the sides of the torso can be plicated to make the waist smaller? I have heard conflicting answers from two plastic surgeons. Thanks very much!

For me losing the weight made me look normal, PS made me feel normal.  PS changed my self-image more than losing weight.  I did go for the neck/face lift and my upper and lower lids.  My HMO wouldn't do anything until I'd lost 50% from my drooping upper lids.  I was close but not close enough.  I didn't like my face after the weight loss, so I had the opportunity to fix it and I don't regret it at all.

Good for you , Chris! I just came back from a shopping spree with my 4 yo granddaughter. I bought myself a ton of clothes in size 2 and XS and everyone thought I had my daughter (not my granddaughter) with me. Nope. I don't regret it at all either.

Nobody has said anything directly to me.  There is one parent where I teach that went through a DS and a TT, so she knows the ropes.  Even though I did not tell her it was done, I am pretty sure she figured it out.  My situation is a little different though since I am also a cancer patient, and folks at work are trained to stay out of my business (meant in a nice tone). I just had a double mastectomy and told everyone prior, but I doubt anyone would assume it was for vanity reasons.  When I finish that process and have the exchange done, I am hopefully going to have the turkey neck done too- even then I think people will assume it is cancer.  I had a ton of it on the neck and shoulders.
