X-Post: Dehisc on the skin reduction

Just got back home from leg skin reduction on December 29th...surgery was on the 27th.

Guess who's got wound dehisc....ME!

Not a joking matter, because I've got a hole in my left inner thigh, and incision on the right thigh is looking angry.

Being treated by a wound specialist.  I was nutritionally sound before surgery, so lack of protein isn't the issue.

Wound specialist is talking about something called Arginade, and I already know about Pro-Stat.

Any other ugly healers here?

Congrats on getting your surgery! I know it was an arduous task for you. Even with the complication I am sure you will feel glad that you did it. Did the surgeon tell you why it dehisced so deeply?

i had an ugly wound on my right arm after 2 weeks post op back in October. It was not dehiscence but it did look ugly. It actually was a superficial necrosis, really more of cells sloughing off. You can see the pix in my album. Anyway, it healed right about on time but it seemed to take forever to get there. Then one day the arm spot two long stitches and poof it healed.

I also took a lot of supplements. I have never had healing issues either. And my surgeon (Dr. Capella in NJ) and I were shocked at the arm because my incision had looked spectacular after surgery. So to speed healing of the arm, what really seemed to help in addition to spitting the stitches is increasing blood flow to the site through vigorous exercise, really pumping up my protein, and taking supplements. Zinc and Vit c are good for healing as are amino acids especially glutamine. I use Xtend. Arginine is an amino acid that helps healing but it tastes gosh darn disgusting to the point that I cannot consume it.

my arm healed very nicely and I am not sure if I will need scar revision or not. The body is amazing in how it heals itself. Good luck!

I'm so glad to hear that your arm is feeling/looking better! I remember how sore and painful it looked and imagine it was frustrating! Such good news!

Thank you! It always seems worse when you are going through it. Time seemed to move so slowly. Looking back, it was just a blip and I cannot believe that I am already 3-mos post op.

Edit: BTW, I know it looked AWFUL but it was not painful. The armpits were painful. I have one small surgery this year and then I am thankfully done!

I found L-Arginine capsules at one of my vitamin suppliers.  I intend to order some.  I also have some Amino Complete capsules, which might help until the L-Arginine comes in.

I still drink protein shakes, so that should help, too.

Not sure why the dehisc in this one area.  Right thigh seems to be  OK, except for one little teeny spot..and we're hoping that one goes away.

Weird Wound Healing issues would be me!
I don't have diabetes and do not smoke and yet I had dehiscence and slough to gangrene. I had debridement and WoundVac for seven weeks.

Susan-

You're right about it looking disgusting.   I have a RN changing the bandages every day, and I will be going to a Wound Care Clinic at one of the hospitals where I live.

Staples will (hopefully) come out in a couple more weeks.
