Questions about Panniculectomy

Thanks for the update on BCBS.  I am currently seeking approval on a Panni/Abdominoplasty.  I am trying to get it medically necessary to pay the entire expense as I too have met the same requirements you've indicated.  I have my fingers crossed.....I'm hoping it will be all covered due to my medical history after weight loss surgery in 2008.

Good luck! So far no luck on the TT portion, no matter what it doesn't seem to be deemed medically necessary. Surgeon's office insurance specialist said she's never seem that part covered. Thankful the panni removal was covered, though!

Not all insurances are the same!  You are exactly correct.  I have United Healthcare and they have a total exclusion for all plastics post massive weight loss.  No matter what health problems you have related to your excess skin, they will not approve any plastics.  Our employers pay for our coverage, they are the ones who decide what will and won't be paid for.

I have BCBS that covered it.  The PS had to submit a report indicating weight loss (at least 100 pounds, I was at 150+) and that the apron hung below the pubic bone.  They do not require pictures up front, but could request them so he took pictures.  Prior to the consultation the bariatric doc prescribed some meds for rashes associated with the extra skin.  I was happily surprised that it was covered to be honest!  I read on a different thread that people who go through PS after massive weight loss are statistically more likely to maintain the loss.  Maybe sometime in the future insurance coverage will loosen up a bit more.

Here is an interesting blog post (by a retired ps) that I found to be very helpful on my journey and that is with my living in Israel.

I am one who ALWAYS reminds people to talk about lifting the Mons Pubis when they have a Panniculectomy done.  My good friend had one done and hers was not lifted.  It literally looks like a scrotal sac.  Ask about your belly button and your mons.  Don't leave anything to your surgeon - discuss exactly what will be done.  Ask to see pictures of his previous work.
