Excess Skin Removal and Shopping for Insurance...

I have lost a great deal of weight (250+ pounds) through diet. I have been maintaining the loss for more than four years...I have massive excess skin everywhere, but no rashes or other issues. I have no doctor, no insurance at all.

Due to Obama's Affordable Care Act, I am now shopping for insurance. They say they cannot deny a person for preexisting conditions. Does anyone know of health insurance companies that will cover my skin removal or have any suggestions...?

With no rashes or issues, it will be considered cosmetic IMO and not covered by insurance.  My insurance covered my TT, but I had rashes.  I am saving up for thighs cause I cant live with how the skin hangs :(

The only reason my insurance is paying for my loose skin reduction is that it has caused other medical issues, primarily cellulitis (sub-Q fat infection), and unless I tie it down (wear a girdle or firm support hose), the flapping of my inner thighs interferes with walking.

I understand that's the only way insurance will pick it up, if the skin is causing medical problems.

I'm wondering if adverse psychological effects might be a reason for them to pay as well.

Adverse psyc effects isn't a reason recognized for plastic surgery coverage -  I checked with several companies and it's denied on that basis.

I had many medical issues related to my excess skin, but since my insurance had a total exclusion post massive weight loss, none of my medical issues mattered.

That really stinks!

Society tells us that we are messing up the scenery when we are MO/SMO, then we get that taken care of, and have skin issues, and insurance won't  help us take care of them.  Sorta feels like punishment for being formerly obese.

Don't they know that infections caused by skin issues can lead to sepsis?  That has happened to me, and that is nothing to play with!  The last time I got a cellulitis attack in my legs, my doctor had to prescribe not one, but *two* different antibiotics to get rid of it. The germs had become resistant to Keflex, and had to be followed up with Cipro.  It may have even been a different germ!  At that point, she became my advocate for skin removal, and went to bat for me with the insurance companies.

I tell you, I should own stock in bleach manufacturing, because I thoroughly disinfect my bathroom and shower every time I take a shower, to try to avoid getting  an infection.  It takes a lot of bleach to disinfect an entire bathroom!

I'm just waiting for a surgery date now.  The insurance company has approved my surgery.  They'll also cover rehab facility care, physical therapy and a home health aide/nurse visits for wound care post-op.
