Tummy tuck tax deduction in Canada

I was sleeved in June 2011 and have reached my goal weight.  Yeah!  Best decision I ever made.  I am planning a much needed tummy tuck soon which is not covered by by health insurance here in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Was wondering if anyone has successfully claimed the cost of a tummy tuck as a tax deduction with Canada Revenue Agency?  The information on the CRA website indicates cosmetic surgery is not deductable unless it is 'medically necessary'.  In my opinion it is medically necessary but not sure if the tax department agrees. Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with this since the tax department changed the rules for plastic surgery tax deductions in 2010.  Thanks.

Tips I have lesrned over the years reading on this board:I live in Israel but most insurance plans call for medical to mean rashes fungi sores in the folds of blubber.
DOCUMENT everything with your doc/dermatologist and what if anything was prescribed for you.
You are not looking for Cosmetic but RECONSTRUCTIVE AFTER WEIGHT-LOSS.
I hope my observations can help you as they did me.

Thanks for these helpful suggestions and  tips...good point about this being reconstructive surgery rather than cosmetic.  Although I have to pay for the surgery myself I am hoping to be able to be able to deduct the cost as a medical expense on my income tax and using the right terminology will be important.  Thanks again.

Will your provincial insurance cover a panniculectomy?  That would save you a lot.  I paid $5000 for a full tummy tuck and mons reduction.  Looks like OHIP covered about half as the full cost would have been about $10000.

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora.  Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

I live in Nova Scotia and our government health plan unfortunately does not cover any of the cost for this type of reconstructive surgery following bariatric surgery.  I understand that a TT was covered in the 1990's after gastric bypass and then they discontinued even doing any kind of bariatric surgery here.  They now do VSG but the wait list is long....years...and a TT or even a panniculectomy are no longer covered at all.  I traveled out of province to have my VSG and paid for it myself but was able to deduct it as a medical expense on my income tax but it is less clear whether I can deduct any of the costs of the TT.  The CRA website just says only cosmetic surgery that is medically necessary is deductible so it depends on whether they would consider this 'medically necessary.'   The income tax rules were changed in 2010 re cosmetic surgery medical deductions so hoping someone has had favourable experience with this as a tax deduction as even that would help offset the $11,000+ cost.   Fingers crossed....thanks for the post.
