Autoimmune and plastics
Yes, I have autoimmune. It is celiac - pretty tame as far as autoimmune disorders go. That said, I had a lot of concerns about the possible link of implants to other autoimmune disease (I think it was RA specifically). Having one autoimmune increases my risk for developing others. So I had an at length discussion with my surgeon on this. He said there is no clinical evidence that links implants to autoimmune or breast cancer (another disease I had concerns over). It is not time for my implants yet. I have to do some further research on the RA issue... while I am hoping to go with silicon gel implants I may opt for saline, which I do not believe has any link whatsoever to RA or other diseases.
I'd love to hear your take on it.

Based on my autoimmune, and the extensive complications I had after my LBL, my surgeon recommended that I not move forward with any kind of implants. Basically, if I were to have any complications after them, they would be coming right back out :( Not really what I wanted to hear...
Im also just curious if anyone else with autoimmune had issues like mine postop, from any surgery. If so, even if not, Id love to know what they may have done differently, or had their Rheum recommend to prevent issues from happening. On top of the incisions opening up and infection and seroma and pain- Ive also been in a nightmare of a flare, which is showing no signs of letting up. I havent had a flare like this in years.
I have lupus and had major complications with bypass. I'm recovering from a lower body lift right now and I have a complication--a seroma. I get an ultrasound tomorrow to determine what we'll do.
My rheum sucks but my surgeon suggested I get off my meds before surgery (Plaquenil, Methotrexate, and folic acid. I did and I'm doing fine as far as lupus. Just not so fine w/ surgery. :/
This is interesting, and more research should be done. I found nothing about this prior to my surgeries. I am experiencing complications, seromas, open wounds, and a flare of joint pain like I have not for over 2 years. I have a non specific inflammatory arthritis, that I used to take plaquenil for. After VSG and weight loss, I have been mostly pain free, managed by alleve only.
I did skip the implants due to fear of my body rejecting them ,I just had a weird feeling. I read so many stories from women that wound up explanting due to them never feeling right. I would love to have gotten them but since I am having complications already, probably a good thing. But I am sure, they have not found a link, or not been published anyway.
