I believe my complications could have been avoided if my surgeon was more responsive to my calls about fevers, swelling, redness and increased pain beginning the night I was discharged from the hospital. Instead, those concerns were dismissed for over a wee****il my incision started coming open to allow infection to seep out... I ended up going to the ER and my PCP to get help, but by that point, it was too late.
My only complication was a small opening at the top of my butt crack. It's an area of high tension and an opening there is common. It closed on its on in a few weeks, maybe a month, but it didn't hurt. The only thing my doc recommended was to increase vitamin C. I seriously increased my protein intake to promote healing.
The general idea is that there are ways to decrease risks of complications, but I do not think anything I did or did not do mattered. And my surgeon followed all the standard preventaive measures. I think that these things happen sometimes due to our own body trying to heal. Like my openings that keep happening, I can see the stitches coming out, that should have just dissolved for most people. The seroma also is because my body not reabsorbing fluid fast enough.
