I also have tricare, i had heard that they will pay for the surgery if there are rashes and  a stable weight. I am at 80lbs down now and my stomach skin is jacked.  I have heard of the mental aspect working but only in relation to breast implants. I know a few women that complained they were small and their husbands didnt find them attractive anymore so after a few months of complaining to the pcm they got the surgery. if it was only that easy for me lol  good luck

i was just wondering if anyone else on here had had any experiences with them. i personally dont see how they dont consider the amount of extra skin most WLS people have as a deformity from a prior surgery. but i guess thats just me. either way i still think its a crock of ****

I tried to get Tricare to help me for 4 yrs while in HI, they would not because there was a big military treatment facility there, they didn't consider it necessary even though I had valid health issues and problems, we pcsed to FL I had an appt on Jan 4th to see about an off base referral (there's not a big MTF here) , got my referral and got my PS approved for a thigh lift, surgery is scheduled next month. For Tricare it needs to be documented but every Tricare region is different...... good luck...

I realize that I am rather late in this topic however this is something I personally know better than most. I had a gastric in 2007 and within 10 months had lost well over 130lbs. The excessive skin made me fill every bit as bad about myself as when I was over weight. Now Tricare is also my insurance provider and they did cover the cost of the gastric bypass. IF tricare payed for your gastric bypass and you can prove that the excessive skin is causing you physical issues then they will pay for the surgery. Im telling you this because they payed for me to have a full body lift. Keys to this is yes I had to prove that the skin was an issue, it was within the correct time frame post op( they do have a time frame) and my plastic surgeons staff were the ones to fill out and submit for the authorization. You can and should fight for it; if they paid for me to get a body lift after a gastric there is no reason this should be an issue for anyone.

CarrieJane,

I ran across your post researching ways for Tricare to cover my surgery. They did do my gastric bypass in 2001, tummy tuck in 2004, and thigh lift in 2005. I was young and still under a parent, but my ID expired before I could complete my arms. Now I am married to a soldier and would like to get it done.

I hope you're still a member and following this post. I would love to speak with you more on the subject. Your post gave me so much hope!
