OTHER SPECIFICS:

7. What type of binder/garment did you use, and for how long?
My ps gave me a Velcro type garment. I wore it 5 weeks.

8. When were your drains removed, and what did you do for taking showers with them in?
I had 4, the first two were removed by the first week, the other 2 a few days later. I was told not to take a shower until they were removed. Sponge bath only.

9. Any complications?
No

10. Issues with constipation post-op, and if so, any solutions that worked for you?
No problems, took stool softener a few days before sx.

11. When was your first?

*Shower? One week.
*Bath?
*First time swimming? 6 weeks
*Time able to sleep on side/stomach? Stomach 2 weeks, side 3 weeks.
*Other significant milestone(s) to share? Sex for example.

12. If you used a recliner, how long? If you did not use a recliner, what methods did you use as an alternate (pillows, etc.)?
I used a recliner, it was great!

13. Did you have help from family, friends, neighbors, or health care providers, and if so, how long? What did they do, and in what time-frame?
My 1st day was in an after care facility, then my dh helped, cooking, helping get up, to the bathroom, with most everything. I remember it hurt a lot going to the bathroom, to have to squat. I would sort of pee, in a simi squatting, not sitting position for a couple of days. TMI

14. What sort of pain management did you employ (i.e. type of drug, pain pump, length/frequency of meds, etc)?
ps gave me percocet, used for a couple of days, then just Tylenol. I also had sleeping pills from ps, used for a few days. Muscle relaxer for sore back from ps.

Swelling every night.

18. Eating any different since ps?
Eating less.

19. Weight gain/loss?
Lost 20lbs so far.

20. How much fat/skin/etc removed?

Am very satisfied.

Not at this time, maybe later.

23. Best things about having had this PS?
She was very professional.

24. Worst things?
Distance

25. Any advice for newbies beginning their research?
Don’t eat anything after sx, except liquids, until you pass gas, stops all nausea. This was my first sx and was scary, but you will remember nothing. Walk as much as possible, makes you heal faster. Take deep breaths after sx, gets out the anesthesia.

26. How many consults did you have prior to surgery? Were the consults paid or free?
One, free.

27. Why did you choose your PS?
Internet

28. Cost and method of payment?
Cash, $7,000, total price.

29. Anything in particular you bought or gathered prior to surgery to aid in your recovery?
Stool softener, pillows, maxi sanitary pads to put between garment and scar area. Extra strength Tylenol , wife beater to wear under comp garmet. Mens they are longer.

30. Anything you would have done differently, in hind sight?
Done it sooner, not worry so much.

31. How long were you 'hunched over'? (for certain surgery's only)
5 days.

1. Procedure(s)
On July 13, 2012 I had and extended tummy tuck, liposuction of the outer thights, medial thigh lift and fat transfer to the buttocks.

2. Occupation
I am a district level school administrator (Director of Special Education). ALthough I am a year round employee, I scheduled my surgery during the summer break when I have the flexibility to take vacation time and work from home.

3. Duties
I spend lots of time in front of a computer, but I also have to travel between campuses. This involved lots of stairs, driving and lugging of bags. I also have a LONG commute (3 hours per day).

4. Time Off
I was permitted to take as much time as I needed (I have 4 weeks of vacation time and had saved up an extensive sick bank), but I played it by ear. In the end, I took two full weeks off and then resumed working. For the third week, I did full days from home (though I was sore and tired from sitting at my desk- lesson learned). The fourth week will be a hybrid. I will work from home for 3 days and go into school for 2 days.

5. Actual Recovery
Do you feel your time off was sufficient for your level of recovery? How recovered were you at the following time frames, on a scale of 1-5 (1 being most and 5 being least healed/pain free):

Week One: This was a pretty rough week. I could get myself in and out of bed (with a stool) and my chair and I was able to shuffle around. That's about it. I needed help with dressings (especially getting in and out of the compression garments) and I needed someone to drive me to my follow up appointments.

Week Two: Two drains were removed, which made moving around a lot easier. I went off all pain meds, so I felt a little sick from that, but every day got easier. At the end of the week, the final drain was removed and it was like a miracle! I felt SOOOO much better without that constant soreness and pain. I was able to move around more easily and didn't need to hunch over.

Week Three: I look and feel great! Swelling is WAY down, I am able to drive and can go out and about on my own. I am not allowed to walk the dog (95 pound Akita) or lift things, and I get tired easily, but that's to be expected. People are amazed at how fast I've recoverd and how quickly I am healing. As for me, I couldn't be happier with how things are going.

6. Children
We have no children, just a large puppy and a cat. My husband has been super supportive about picking up the slack for their care.

OTHER SPECIFICS:

7. What type of binder/garment did you use, and for how long?
I was given two compression garments by the surgeon. They come up to the top of my abdomen and extend to my knees. They fasten on each leg with velcro and have a zipper on top of that. They have open areas in the crotch so you don't need to remove them when nature calls. Once I was able to remove the dressings from my waist, I also began wearing a Flexees garment. Now, I rotate between the three. Sometimes I prefer the surgical version because it's adjustable and a little cooler.

8. When were your drains removed, and what did you do for taking showers with them in?
To be honest, drains were the hardest part of recovery. I got an infection in one drain site which required 20 days of anti-biotics and they were just very sore and uncomfortable. To shower, I tied a ribbon around my waist and pinned the drain lines to it.

9. Any complications?
I had two complications. First, I got an infection in one of my drain sites. I also had two tears in the incisions in my groin (medial thigh lift). This was not at all unexpected and my doctor prepared me for it. I "pack" the wounds twice per day with gauze and saline and am on anti-biotics.

10. Issues with constipation post-op, and if so, any solutions that worked for you?
I began taking a stool softener immediately after my surgery and had my first "movement" 5 days later. It was pretty painful (trying not to strain the incisions and squatting in a less than comfortable position) but then things went back to normal. It should point out though, that I eat a VERY high fiber diet (tons of veggies) so that definitely helped.

11. When was your first:
*Shower? Day 4
*Bath? not yet
*First time swimming? not yet
*Time able to sleep on side/stomach? three weeks
*Other significant milestone(s) to share? Sex for example. Not yet

12. If you used a recliner, how long? If you did not use a recliner, what methods did you use as an alternate (pillows, etc.)?
I used a recliner to lounge in during the day (and still sit in it in the evenings, to help with leg swelling) but I went upstairs to my bed at night.

13. Did you have help from family, friends, neighbors, or health care providers, and if so, how long? What did they do, and in what time-frame? During the first week, at least one sister or parent came by every day. Mainly we just sat and visited, but they also helped me with chores and took me to my appointments. I needed help with wound dressings for the first 4-5 days and getting in and out of the compression garment was definitely a two person job at first.

14. What sort of pain management did you employ (i.e. type of drug, pain pump, length/frequency of meds, etc)? I was on a low dose of oxycodone for about 5 days, then I switched to advil. I was free of all pain medicication by the middle of week 2.

15. How are you or did you treat your scar (massage, silicone sheets, scar creams or gels, etc)? How often and how long? Significant results?
My surgeon hasn't cleared me for this yet- probably due to the open tears.

16. When did you resume working out, and what type of workout?
Not allowed yet- much to my dismay.
