If your WLS scars were keloid, are your plastic's scars keloid too?

I had open rny with a really ugly scar.  It was long and very thick and wide.  I used a product called kelo-cote on it.  It made it look better but that really wasnt much of an improvement.  I was recently diagnosed with a hernia behind the incision.  I had a plastic surgeon repair the hernia.  He had to lengthen the scar in order to do the repair.  But I have to be honest - I am only 2 weeks out of the hernia repair and I can see the scar but it is only a long thin line.  All of the ropeiness and redness are gone.  Once it heals, I plan on using the kelo-cote again to see if that makes it even better.  I also had a bilateral prophyllactic mastectomy with reconstruction from my abdomen back in August.  That work was also performed by a plastic surgeon.  Those scars are nice thin lines as well.  I've been using the kelo-cote on those for the past several months and in some areas, I cannot even feel the line and can barely see it.  So I think the skill of the surgeon makes all of the difference in the world.  But maybe that is just me.

That's reassuring.
I'm going to do my tummy first b/c those scars are concealable.  I'll make every effort to use products that can help with scarring and see how it goes.  That scar may help me determine if I'll do my arms or not.
I will make sure when I schedule consults I address  this issue specifically.

One thing to keep in mind is that a plastic surgeon is going to take more time and do a better stitch line than a general surgeon who is just looking to "close you up" after they finish tinkering around inside. My WLS scars stuck around, turned pink and bumped up (partially my fault for tanning too soon afterwards)....

Im only 16 days post PS, but I can already tell the majority of my incision line is probably going to be invisible....in some spots its closed together perfectly, flat and almost seemless. Other spots are a little bunched up but I imagine they will lay down over time. A PS (hopefully) takes much more care in the asthetics of an incision line than a WLS surgeon.

Very true.
The scars from WLS were messy and ugly from day one, so he obviously didn't put much work into them.
Perhaps if a surgeon knows you're prone to this, there are steps they can take to minimize the severity.

I had my 6 week post op appt yesterday with PS - I healed great.  He said my scars look "fabulous".  But he and I had this discussion - not much you can so stop it if you don't heal smooth.
