If your WLS scars were keloid, are your plastic's scars keloid too?

I didn't use any scar treatment on my RNY scars and they are HORRIBLE!!
Red, raised and just plain gross.
I'm 14 months post op, btw.
Does that mean that when I have plastics, those scars will keloid too?
I mean, I will use any creams, tapes, ointments...whatever is needed to prevent them, but what are the chances the plastic scars will not be keloid?
Thanks!
Sarah

Probably. You should have a very thorough discussion about this with your surgeon.
I heal very well, and I asked my ps if I could expect my ps scars to be like my band incisions. He said that they will likely be the same by 2 years out....but no guarantee.
Now, at 17 months after my arms/breast surgeries, the scars are Ll but invisible ... I cannot feel about 80% of the scar line.
I did not use any cream, patch, etc .. I just let my body do its thing.
Good luck .....in my opinion, scars are still better than hanging skin.

As the last poster wrote,Scars are better than hanging skin !
My scars are keloid and hypertrophic, raised wide and itchy and at times painful especially the vertical one! Considering the numerous surgeries I've had I'm not surprised however in my upcoming Plastics for Breast Lift the scars will also be addressed in a revision.
Speak to your PS in your consult for opinion.

I don't think I get keloid scars but I tend not to scar well. They're usually not raised, but they'll be red/dark for many many years, which seems much longer than other people I know like my husband and close friends.
I think starting at 3 or 4 weeks out, my PS is going to have me start wearing these silicone things over my incision lines. His nurse gave me the info on which ones to buy and what websites to get them from. I think the TT one was like $75 (it's reusable, thank heavens!) and I'm not sure about the price of the breast ones because my husband was kind enough to order them for me. I asked his nurse how long I'd wear them and she said 3-4 *months,* which seems crazy because you have to wear them for 20 hrs every day and off for the other 4 hrs. But if it will give me the chance to have the best-possible scar results, I'll do it :)!
I'm not sure what the silicone sheets do exactly, but they obviously are supposed to help give the best scar result. I just did a quick google search and saw this article (no idea of the validity of it) and it says "They work best on hypertrophic scars or keloid scars."

LIke someone else said, definitely have a thorough conversation with your PS about scarring and ask about the silicone sheets/wraps if he doesn't mention that as part of his typical healing process.

Yes you will keloid with PS scars too. I too am a keloider...(is that a word?) my tiny incisions from my VSG and my gallbladder surgery all have keloids and are pretty thick. I just had my TT 4 months ago and to prevent that from happening I have to wear paper tape over all of my incisions for 6 months. No big deal really. MY PS said that this helps the keloids from forming. So far so good for me. I do not use anything else on them...just the tape. The funny things is when I had my TT, he removed most of my scars (even my csection scar) when he removed my extra skin. So I only have 1 small scar left...kind of cool.
Yeh the scares are not the best..but I would much rather have them than that extra skin.
good luck to you.

I get keloids and hyperpigmentation,, they shot up my abdominal scar with cortisone to flatten it out, but the scar will always be dark. They will have to to he same on my thighgs. Actually sometimes a keloid is not a keloid at all, but hypertrophic healing. I would rather have scars than thigh skin hanging over my knees, any day!

Thanks all for the replies!
I agree that scars for a tummy tuck may outweigh the skin, but on my arms....I don't know. I'm really going to have to weigh that one carefully. Thighs would be worth it too, mobility wise.
But my arms are what I was wanting to do first, but I may just work them out and fill in as much as I can with muscle, and not flap my arms around when I'm wearing a tank top...they're really not that bad. Definitely not worth a huge ugly scar.
Food for thought...thanks again everyone.
