Anyone have to have their incision reclosed surgically?

I'm almost 3 weeks post abdominal wall reconstruction and abdominoplasty. I have a T incision. My drains were still in 2 weeks post op and all of a sudden both lost suction and then fell out. I had a tiny hole that was healing well at the intersection of the scars but when the drains came out I started draining from there and it made the wound much larger. Today the surgeon told me I could wound pack for 6 weeks and hope it heals or I could have surgery on Friday and he would clean it up and restitch it and put in a new drain. Anyone have this second surgery? What was the outcome? Were you offered the choice and which did you do?

Thanks for answering :)

Surprisingly enough, this seems to be the one complication that I havent experienced, so I cant offer anything by the way of experience here. That having been said, if I was the one going through that right now, I would choose the surgery, simply because having an incision open was my biggest fear, and I dont think I could handle packing it for 6 weeks. I think that whole process would make me anxious. I think the scar would look better if you went the surgical route, instead of healing from the inside out. However, there's the financial factor to take in as well... is the surgeon waving his fee? Would insurance pay for what ever the cost might be? etc.
Its a tough choice for sure, and I've never really heard of anyone being offered a choice. I think its great that your surgeon is including you in your treatment plan! I'm sure that whatever you decide, everything will work out just fine, and that this will soon be long behind you.
Please keep us posted!

According to his office, this is covered under my insurance as a "complication" from surgery. He said he wanted to fix it surgically and it was definitely medically recommended to fix it surgically but that it was marginal and we could try to approach it conservatively. For most of the reasons you stated, I chose the surgery and will be having it on Friday. Thanks for your thoughts and response! I'm sorry you have had complications too - I am going to read about what happened to you and I hope all is better now!

I had a minor complication about a month after my TT-
Dehiscence (small opened on the left bikini, and slough turned gangrene at the crossroad of the T connection.
I was in operating room for both-stitches to packing and debridement. After two days the PS put me in a wound Vac and living in Israel with socialized medicine I stayed in hospital for almost seven weeks on the Wound Vac machine. I could have been home but as I live alone in a hi-rise building the PS fought the HMO for me to remain in hospital.
I wrote about some of my experience on my OH blog about half a year ago.
Make your "operation" (it is an operation) go smoothly and be your last unexpected procedure.

Yup. I had extended incisions from my brachioplasty all the way down both sides. One side simply wasn't healing and was spreading open. I also experienced the drains losing suction and falling out. So, we went back in and reclosed it about about 3 weeks post-op. She also re-did my belly button that wasn't doing well and tightened up my mons. I had to pay for the anesthesia time, but she didn't charge me a surgical fee. Definitely glad we did the adjustment!

Good luck!
