Starting to investigate plastic surgery - is a bariatric specialist important?
Hi, everyone -
I've enjoyed reading this forum and learning more about options in plastic surgery. I have some flappy arms and a flappy stomach that I'd love to get corrected. My question is this : is it important (in your opinion) to seek out a plastic surgeon that specializes in bariatric patients? There aren't a lot out there with this specialty, but I can see how having a lot of experience in our specific "problems" could be a really big deal.
I'd love to hear any and all thoughts on this issue. Thanks for your time!

Thank you for the responses!!
mywlsjourney09 - that is exactly what I was going to ask too! ;) How do you find these surgeons that specialize in bariatric plastic surgery?
Do bariatric PS's have some sort of national association? My WLS does know a couple of plastic sugeons, and so they have done work with the un-obese... but I don't know if that qualifies them as specialists in this area.
I'd love to not have to travel for plastics. But, I'm willing to if I need to in order to get the best results. I haven't decided much of anything yet.

I traveled to Monterrey Mexico for surgery with Dr Sauceda. We have a group here on OH. You can click on Dr Sauceda in my siggy line, but the group is:
http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/Dr_Sauceda_Patients/discussion
There are photos and we have lots of vets who post about their "Body by Sauceda".
What I liked about Dr Sauceda, is that you are in a 24/7 clini****il you can manage being at the hotel. Once you go to the hotel, Dr S stops by daily and his nurse Patty comes by daily to help you take your shower, put on ointment and gauze and get you back into the compression garment. It's affordable and as you combine procedures, the price goes down. Dr S uses an epidural and twilight sedation, so no after effects for most folks. I had wonderful care while I was in Mexico and kept in touch with Dr S after I got home. If you don't email every 48 hrs, he sends you an email to see how you are doing. You are always as close as email or the phone.
Dr Sauceda will be in Las Vegas for consults on June 1st and 2nd.

I've heard of people going to Mexico for surgeries and so far I haven't heard of a bad experience. My question though is if something does happen once you get home would you just go to your local ER? Also how long are you there before you are able to fly home?
Loving my new life and all the wonderful things that go with it, on to my next journey! 99 pounds down and about 10 more to go but it has been a heck of a ride...
I was in Monterrey for 2 weeks, most are only there for 12 days. You do need to talk with your PCP before you head down. Kaiser would have had to treat me if there were any problems. My PCP had her NPs take out my stitches at 3 weeks out. You do stay in touch with Dr Sauceda for months after your surgery. You can take pictures and email him and he gets right back to you. I came home with stitches in my groin and breasts and one drain that fell out about a week after I got home.
Some insurance policies don't cover PS, but others treat it as any other wound care.

I think it's important and is one big reason I choose my dr. She has worked with over a thousand bariatric patients and that's good enough for me. She did an arm lift and TT revisions for me Mon. and I can tell already it's a great job.
I found her by a post right here, though she was already on my short list of drs. I was interested in. I do a lot of research online.
Good luck in your search!
