I lost 155 pounds though diet and exercise, mostly cardio. For what it's worth, I believe that intense cardio, especially swimming (freestyle-hard), will hep develop your upper body, your quads and your core all at the same time. Prior to my LBL in February, I swam five miles each week, I did cardio on an elliptical machine and I lifted weights.
I did do crunches on an abs machine, along with reps on an obliques machine. However, at the end of the day, I think that the swimming and the other cardio made my surgery and the recuperation much easier.

I did 10 months of mat pilates 2x a week and some at home, as well as some reformer pilates. I threw in some yoga but really prefer pilates and zumba. I also walked a lot. Maybe the hiking helped with my core as well.
I had my thighs and arms done at the same time as my LBL so the month before surgery I would lay flat on the floor, hold my arms and legs stiff and get myself to a sitting position without using them. It came in very handy post op. I was in a clinic bed for the first 5 nights, GREAT, but then switched to a hotel and had a flat bed so the skills came in very handy for getting myself up and down in bed. I had my stomach muscles tightened during surgery so it felt like I had Jillian Michaels standing over me yelling "get up Lee!". The workouts really paid off and I'm so happy I did them. At three months post-op, my stomach muscles are still pretty tight and sore.

Thanks Lee. I have been walking for the past 10 months for a hour a day, everyday. During the winter months I have walked on a treadmill with the incline set from 8 to 9.0 and between 3.4 and 3.6 mile speed for a hour. I can really feel that in my center core. I am going to incorporate some more strength training for my abs to prepare for this surgery. Thank you.
