This may be a dumb question, but can you get short term leave from work for Plastics if insurance doesn't cover it?

not a dumb question at all!

I was out for 3 1/2 weeks for my PS..and yes I did get state disability (I live in california and we have it here).  I was worried that because it was plastics it would be a problem..but it wasn't.    I also was granted a medical leave at work...they can't deny it and you don't need to tell them what you are haVing.  My doc filled out the papers...they do not need to know you are having plastic surgery!

I am going thru the process right now. I have my surgery on the 20th. But for where I work and I assume anywhere you can put in for Family Medical Leave. Your Dr has a portion to fill out and I am sure it will be written up as Reconstuctive Surgery of some sort. (I havent filled mine out yet so just guessing) Then when I have the surgery I actually switch to being off on a Medical leave. The Dr again fills out some other papers which this one gives him the option of comming back to work with restrictions (maybe no lifting or no sitting for long hours ect) For me I cant have any restrictions before comming back so I have to wait until I am completley healed before they allow me back. This is a unpaid leave so I hope I come back withing a few months. I do get railroad retirment pay when I am off but it is a very very small amount, which will help but I will be living off the last of my savings that I didnt spend on PS. I am not sure if you would qualify for any Disability insurance from being off, I know I didnt because I used the Railroad Retirement instead and you can only use one or the other. But worth looking into. Once I come back to work if I have to call in sick due to complications or follow up appointments I then use the days left from Family Medical Leave Act. I am new at all this paperwork stuff so I hope it helps.

Jennifer, I am not sure how strict your HR is, but mine asked for a doctor to actually see me the days prior to returning to work. I had had dr S sign my return to work paperwork and they asked if I had actually seen him.  I hadn't.  so they made me see my PCP and have him sign the form under Dr S's signature.

Your totally right.  If I am off for more than 30 days(which of course I will) I have to get a physical from our work Dr.  Its a easy one to pass, drug test, ekg, sometimes they feel your stomach, look in your mouth ect. Maybe see it you can touch your toes ect... So just one more hurdle for me, but I small one in the big picture of things.

It is possible to receive short term leave benefits. You just need to make sure that plastics arent an exclusion on the policy.

I'm an HR Manager for my real job. I don't know your company's leave policies, but I can answer in general perspective.

Plastic Surgery is covered under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).  The only requirement is that you give your company 30 days notice that you will be taking FMLA.  FMLA is unpaid time off that provides job protection while you are out. You are not required to give 30 days notice for emergency surgery.  Your company can waive the 30 day requirement if they want.

Here are the FMLA qualifications:
Employees are eligible for leave if they have worked for their employer at least 12 months, at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location where the company employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles.

Under FMLA you do not have to tell ANYONE, why you are out --- Not even the HR department or your manager.  Your doctor will have to provide a certification to your company that you are under his/her care that is covered under FMLA.  They will have to tell a course of treatment...will require hospitalization and follow-up care, but the doctor does not have to provide a diagnosis or state what the surgery is.

Your company may have a short term disability insurance package that covers plastics.  This short term disability could provide income protection while you are out.  To qualify for these benefits, you will have to disclose the details of your medical condition to the short term disability provider.

I don't know your company benefits.  My company's policy did not cover cosmetic surgery.  My surgery was determined to be cosmetic.  I didn't have any skin issues or hernia or anything.  I ended up taking vacation and unpaid leave for my surgery, but the FMLA ensured I'd still have a job when I  was ready to come back to work.

Leave programs vary from company to company.  I can't comment on taking "short term leave" because I don't know what that means in your company.

Hope this helps.

Yes
I took 6 days when I had my band and plan to take 7 days when I have my tt.

Both procedures are self pay

Thanks to your help I found the section in my benefits handbook.  Check this out.  Wonder what you think of this!

Exclusions for short term leave:

A cosmetic surgery or elective procedure, unless the surgery or procedure is:

-Performed in connection with, or as a result of, a covered injury, accident, or illness in which the surgery or procedure is required due to reconstruction or medical necessity

-transgender surgery.

So basically if I had transgender surgery it would be covered.

Otherwise, I have to save up as much PTO as possible and use the FMLA.
