So Pissed!
I don't want to be a rat, but I am 99% sure that my surgeons nurse just flat out lied to me on the phone. I called over two hours ago, said I am having severe itching from the pain meds and is it possible to get a stronger med than benadryl. She says she will speak with my surgeon and he will probably change my meds, she reads off my phone number that is some 423 area code and I said no, thats not me, and I give her my number.
She calls back and says "Hi is this Amanda?", I said no, this is Heather, she says "Well can I speak to Amanda?" I said, this is Heather, we spoke 2 hours ago, I called about the itching, she goes "oh, I didn't get the message." I said what is your name, she tells me and I say, YOU are the one I spoke with. She goes oh thats right, I spoke with your Dr and he said take extra strength tylenol, I said are you kidding? Extra strength tylenol? Than I said, I had pretty major surgery yesterday, this is not tylenol kind of pain, she goes "Well I just figured that the extra strength would help" I say, so you didn't even speak to my surgeon??? First she tried to evade the question, than she says "oh I did and thats what he said, but you know what? Ill run it by him again."
I get off the phone and I was fuming bc I knew by our conversation she was lying to me. So than she calls back two minutes later and my Dr conveniently JUST went into surgery, so she had to run it by a different Dr who said Tylenol extra strength should be fine and that I am reacting to the codeine. I say does that Dr you spoke with realize I am only one day post op from a complete reconstructive abdominoplasty??? She says "well you want to stop itching right?" I said yes, but I also need pain medication, she says "well they will all make you itch." I say it is not an alergic reaction, I am not going to go into anyphylactic shock, its a histamine response and I need something to take with the meds.
So now SUPPOSEDLY she will discuss it with my surgeon when he is out of surgery. I am going to be a tattle tale bc I am so fuming right now! She got caught in a lie by me and her back pedaling did not work so she is just snow balling the BS so she doesn't get ratted out by a *****y itchy patient.
This just make me sick, first because she didn't help at all, second because I'm a nurse and she's making the career look bad!
Is there more than one nurse you could speak to?
Another thought is to contact your pharmacist. When you call make sure you ask for the pharmacist and give him the facts. He can make a recommendation and he can also contact your PS and ask for a change in the pain med.
