Breast Implants

Raven, a 10%/year failure rate, wow that seems high.   That means that 10% of the implants done in 2011 will need to be replaced in 2012???  Gosh, are they under warranty?

Maybe I am wording it wrong, maybe it should read 10% in any given year?  Or flat rate of 10%?  The number frequently quoted is 10% and I know that is how some folks figured out the 10year mark for replacement.

In an old study from 2005, the NY times reported that  "April 6 - In documents made public on Wednesday, health regulators estimated that up to 93 percent of silicone breast implants ruptured within 10 years" They would have been studying the older style of implants because in 2005 the ban on silicone implants was still in effect.

There are tons of other studies out there that put the failure rate at 5-7%.  It is difficult to judge some of these statistics and studies because they never seem to supply you with all the information on how they got to those numbers. Here is a link to a table that contains lots of stats...of course I can't find the dates on some of the studies there.

That makes sense.  I can't remember where I read it either; it has been so long, but somewhere those numbers were extrapolated, like you said, to mean the implants had a certain shelf life.

Denise, 2 questions:

What does explant mean?

What is half under the muscle and half over? How would they do that?

thanks, Jenny

Hey Jenny! Explant means to remove the Implant. 1/2 & 1/2 is that the implant sits 1/2 under the muscle and half under breast tissue. My surgeon told me unders is a misnomer and few people have implants fully under because it requires significantly more cutting into the chest wall. That's what I'm told anyway!

Hope this helps!

I had saline under the muscle and they definitely migrated to my sides when I layed down. They were 840cc! I say were, because I had them explanted (I only had to pay about 2k for that)

Did you have smaller ones implanted, and if so, did you have to have a lift first?

I just had a simple explant, because I wanted to live with my natural breasts for a while and then decide if I could live with them or if I wanted to go through the implant process again. I have been living with my natural breasts (that bounced back pretty good after being blowed up by 840cc implants), but now since I am losing so much fat, they are starting to get pathetic and I am considering a small lift with a 300cc implant, just to fill me out a little. I never want those dolly parton boobs again!

Actually, if you want to see how much of a train wreck my boobs were go to : www.justbreastimplants.com/gallery/double_bubble_photos.htm

That's my former boobs, but they misquoted by saying they are 700ccs, they were really 840
