University of Kansas Residence Asethetic Program

I had LBL 2 months ago.  No seromas, no open incisions, NO PROBLEMS.

I am an RN with over 25 years experience and have worked at teaching hospitals.  I do not work at KU.  When you go to a residents program there is a board certified plastic surgeon assisting.  After you have your consult with a resident and they devise a plan of care, the plastic surgeon that supervises that resident comes in and re-evalutes and approves/dis-approves the recommendations.  When having mark ups done, the resident does them with the plastic surgeon present to approve.  The residents strive to be perfect as they are graded on their work.

My resident, Dr. Trey Aquadro, will graduate this summer and will be opening private practice in Alabama.  All you OH'ers he is fabulous!

Val,

I can't thank you enough for taking time to give this account of your experience with a residency program. It means even more coming from an experienced RN. So glad to hear that things went well for you. I'll look up the program and add it to the list above.

Edit...I just noticed that they also have a program there for post-bariatric surgery patients, so I posted that info above, also.

Dr. Ponnuru was the supervising surgeon and works with bariatric pts at another facility for his own practice.

I am going back for BL with side boob removal March 16th. Want to get things done prior to my resident leaving. Dr. Aquadro is great.

Val,

Did you find that the costs were reduced over what you would have paid at a private pratice in the same area?

Good to hear you are going to be able to finish up before your favorite doc leaves.

The surgeons fee was exactly 1/2 of others.  The hospital and anesthesia fees are the same.  My bariatric surgeon priced me a tt only @ $7,500, no overnight stay, no insurance, and no pain pump.  I paid $8,500 for LBL with overnight stay, pain pump and cosmetassure plastic surgery insurance (covers complications for 1 year).  The extras were the $1,000 more. Going to a residency program I got a LBL from a plastic surgeon for the same price of a TT from a general surgeon.

Val-

What site did you visit that had the PS residency focusing on the once morbid obese?

I have a surgeon locally, but I'm not totally comfortable with him.

HW 405/SW 397/CW 138/GW 160  Do the research!  Check the stats!
The DS is *THE* solution to Severe Morbid Obesity!

I've done extensive research on this in the NYC area. Here's what I can add to the conversation. Keep in mind that residency programs are about the faculty and the residents. If you are considering going this route, check out both the resident and the attending physician who will be supervising your surgery.

I know people who have gone to both of these programs and they are extremely happy with their results. IMO for those on a budget, residency & fellowship programs are definitely an option to consider.

The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary has a fellowship program for plastic surgeons which is extremely competitive. The doctors here have already completed their residencies & have opted to continue their training for an additional year rather than begin their private practices. Personally, I wouldn't have abdominoplasty done through this program after massive weight loss but I would definitely consider  having other work done here.

They also have another program in which your surgery is performed by a board certified plastic surgeon. The prices are higher than the fellowship but nowhere near what these doctor's charge in the private practices in Manhattan.

Mount Sinai Hospital has a residency program. Timing of your consult is very important here as they get very busy & if your consult is late into the resident's training he/she won't be able to schedule your surgery before completing their training. You want to schedule your consult for  January or July to assure getting on the schedule. I know this from other people who have gone here & they will not tell you this when you call. The clinic fee is $225 for the consult. Their surgical fee is not based on the type of procedue but rather on the number of procedures. I believe one procedue is $2200. Two procedures done at the same time is roughly 4K.

Wow! Thank you SO much for this information. These sound like great programs. I've had several messages from people who are thankful to find out about residency programs, and who plan to use them, so if anyone has any additional information to add to this thread, please do so. Thanks again for taking the time to add your information.
