When you schedule for your first consult with a PS do they charge you a consultation fee to be taken off if you schedule surgery with them and if so, what is the average cost of this consultation?

It really varied when I was looking... the fee was always taken out of the surgery cost, but the fee ranged from $250 to $25 depending on the surgeon.

In my area in the Midwest it was standard $90.00 fee - to then be applied to the surgical fee if you go forward.  The PS I chose also included in the $90.00 fee any additional visits before saying "yes" to the surgery.  I did go back for a second visit armed with a lot of questions, etc.  No charge for that.  A part of me hated to pay $90.00 just to meet a surgeon but decided just to chalk it up to finding the best one out there.

Thank you both for your answers.  I knew there was a charge but just wondering how much.  It could really add up if I go see several different Plastic surgeons before I feel satisified.  Just starting to dip my toe in the pool.  Thanks again.

In my area consultations, pre op and post op appts are free.....but I am sure rolled into the over all cost, I am just not paying anything separate for them.

When I was looking I found that it was anywhere from $0 - $100 for the consult fee. I lucked out and the Dr that I have choosen to go with didn't charge, however, all the rest it would have came off at the end.

In our area, most of them are free.

It's true that the fees can add up fast, but don't let that stop you from picking through a lot of surgeons. Just talking to a lot of them makes you... well... better at talking to them. It makes you a smarter consumer and inconsistancies then show up as red-flags. I just chose not to go to the $250 type because I felt as though that much of a fee, which would then go toward the surgery, would be too likely to influence my overall decision, and I didn't want to be influenced that way. I understand that they don't want to waste time on window shoppers, but when it's too much it almost seems like bullying (like "do the surgery here or lose your money"). I don't want to deal with anyone like that.

Both of the surgeons that I talked with in Pensacola were 60.00 (to be applied towards surgery). I have read that you can negotiate with some offices to avoid the fee, but not sure how you would go about that. A few years ago, I used my Blue Cross card to pay for a consult about breast implant removal because the surgeon asked for it. They paid the consult fee, no questions asked. Not sure if that's a common thing or not.

The first two surgeons I saw the consult were free. The third who I went with was $150 but the overall price was much cheaper than the first two.
