Michelle,
I do not think anyone does a good job talking about the emotional impact of having PS. I am recovering in MX 1 week out and I have done nothing but cry all day, for no reason. This is not me at all. This week I have gone to movies, gone site seeing, I have been pretty active until today.
It will pass and all the pain, emotions and heartache will be worth it.
Did you find your keys yet?

Awww Bethany, I'm sorry you're having a tearful day.  I hope tomorrow you wake up and feel brighter and more cheerful.  The amazing thing is that it can come and go very quickly.  What are you doing for dinner tonight?

Thought I would post some excerpts for you from the science/doctor guys discussing how normal your response to the surgery is. I always think the most comforting thing is to talk with folks on a board like this. The discovery that "omg, I am not the first person to feel like this" always has made me feel better.  It doesn't hurt though to see some opinions from the docs or the science studies to back up the information we all are reporting.

Here are some quotes:

During a major stress event such as abdominal surgery, steroids such as cortisol and corticosterone are released in quantities on average of 160mg. Studies have shown that the high level of steriod impacts the patients "verbal declarative memory". Once the cortisol levels return to normal, this effect stops.   - taken from coursework at the University of Plymouth Department of Psych.  In a nutshell this means - ITS HARD TO REMEMBER INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN VERBALLY TOLD TO US.  Thank goodness, I just thought I was suddenly having to take notes about the surgeons instructions because he had removed part of my brain along with my excess skin.

Discussing the effects of general anesthesia which remain in your body tissues affecting you physically and mentally for up to 3 weeks post-op. "These residual effects can include LETHARGY AND DEPRESSION AND EVEN BOUTS OF UNEXPLAINED WEEPINESS OR DESPAIR."

"Quite frequently patients experience a brief period of "let-down" or depression after cosmetic surgery. Some may subconsciously have expected to feel and look better "instantly," even though they rationally understand that this will not be the case. Patients commonly question their decision to have surgery during the first few days after surgery. As the healing occurs, these thoughts usually disappear quickly. If you feel depressed, understanding that this is a "natural" phase of the healing process may help you to cope with this emotional state." - Dr. Simoni, plastic surgeon

"The ‘blues’ often set in about three days after surgery and many people at this time often wonder what possessed them to have surgery in the first place. However, the good news is that this is usually temporary. As the post-operative effects subside and the ‘new you’ begins to emerge, your mood should soon lift again." - Dr. Mark Henley, plastic surgeon

I can't find the real science data that I was referred to originally when I was learning about the chemical and hormonal impact of surgery. I know there is something about cutting thru fatty tissue and the release of neurotransmitters but damn, I just can't find it.

Hope you are doing better today. Just remember, this is going to pass. It just sucks while you are going thru it.
