Scar care

I'd love to read what your surgeon said about scar care?

Cream (what kind)?

Silicone strips?  What kind?

At what point post op?  Are all the scabs off etc?

What worked best for you? Are you pleased with how you healed?

All advice gladly accepted!

I used ointment until everything was healed.  Then I went with Vit E lotion.  About 3 months I started the silicon strips.  They worked ok as long as I was wearing my bra/arm garment and my body garment to hold them in place.  I tried to use them for a couple of months.  Then I stopped and just use different lotions on my scars.  They are looking good and getting lighter.

Chris, thanks.  I have awhile to decide about the silicone strips.  Dr. Sauceda said it's easier than massaging lotion onto the incisions 4x a day.  I'll definitely go the Vitamin E route, at least at the beginning.

My surgeon knew I had done my research, so left it up to me.

I cannot use the silicone strips or anything with adhesive due to allergies.

For my adhesive burns and IV spots (I have keloids), I am already using Mederma and Bio-Oil. Once I no longer have "broken skin" (as per directions), I will be using them on the scars as well. I am using antibiotic ointment until the scabs are gone and everything is closed up.

I'm using the antibiotic ointment as well.  I still have a lot of scabs and it helps to keep them from drying out and pulling.  I have a friend that used Mederma and it worked really well on her shoulder surgery scar.  Have you found anywhere cheaper than the pharmacy to get it?

I bought both the Bio-Oil and the Mederma on Amazon.com. The pharmacy price was more than twice what I paid. I will say that the price can change quickly at Amazon, based on stock and the resellers.

My ps actually told me to wait 6 months and then start to massage the scars with lotion. He said that any lotion will work well because it is actually the massage that lessens the scars.

I massaged after my VSG and my scars were barely visible anymore.  Of course they were tiny in comparision.  Interesting that you were told to wait 6 months.  I wonder why so long?

I am wondering about that too.  I will check with him about it at my next check up next week.  I'll let you know what he says :)
